What did you do to learn how to play your guitar?!? I've heard that people learned from listening to radio, and some people learned listening to recordings/playing the songs they heard. I really need to start spending more time learning how to play. Anyhow... - Fri, 3 Jul 2009 12:44am Edited: Fri, 3 Jul 2009 1:02am

I did seven years of private jazz piano lessons and a music minor at uvic, both of those gave me a solid grounding in understanding music theory and chord relationships and a bunch of other things that most guitarists seem really weak on.

the actual learning to play process was pretty simple. I was a teenager and into punk and metal. I saved up my money and bought a crappy combo practice amp from a pawn shop and an entry-level Ibanez. I'd look up tabs of songs I liked. do you know how to read tabs? they're really easy to figure out as long as they're done correctly. they show the fret numbers used and a really basic approximation of the rhythm based on spacing. keep it simple at first. start slow and work your way up.

I'm going to admit that my technique is weak and I'm probably not using my hands/fingers the most efficient way. I probably have a lot of bad habits that a few guitar lessons would have fixed. but I'm cheap.

mainly, you just have to stick with it. condition yourself to practicing for a long period of time. don't get frustrated with your lack of progress early on. by the way there are a TON of "online lessons" and youtube videos and crap that are basically like having a teacher next to you. not really my thing though. - Fri, 3 Jul 2009 12:56pm Edited: Fri, 3 Jul 2009 12:56pm

I can read tab, and can play bits of songs by listening to them, but the one thing I can never figure out, how to play stuff like power chords. It's like a hit a wall and can't get past the wall, so to speak. - Sat, 4 Jul 2009 10:53am

What kinda stuff do you want to play? If you wanna play punk rock, you're in luck...you can learn a power chord by watching any band...and write any song you want to from there. Don't practice...don't take lessons...just write some songs and play what you enjoy playing. If you want to become a proficient "musician"...you'd probably be best off just starting some lessons. I mean, anything can be self taught...most people just don't ahve the patience... - Sat, 4 Jul 2009 11:45pm

Thanks for that T. Now, if you want to actualy not suck, I would recomend finding a friend that plays guitar to teach you any of the things that you're having trouble picking up on. After that, practice, practice, practice. I don't play with a band anymore, and I still practice 90 minutes a day. Some of my other friends are up around 3 hours per day. It all depends on how proficient you want to be. Like most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it.

Well yeah I wanna learn basic stuff and keep it simple, cause that's what sells :) I kick myself cause I can't figure out how to do simple power chords, then again I don't pick up the guitar as much as I should. The thing with the head injury, I lost my rhythm, most frustrating. (But I managed to get my rhythm back.) - Sun, 5 Jul 2009 5:58pm Edited: Mon, 6 Jul 2009 12:06am

a power chord is just the root and fifth of a chord, sometimes with the octave above as well.

here are some power chords!

I learned to play guitar form the Doug Marks Metal Method series (remeber those adverts in Guitar Player and Guitar For the Practicing Musician mags in the early 80's?). That and the usual practice, practice, practice that resulted in not a whole lot of schoolwork getting done. - Mon, 6 Jul 2009 12:36pm

As someone pointed out there are Youtube videos which make learning alot easier and faster. however, I spent about 4 years in my bedroom learning how to play. We are talking like 8 hours a day everyday. Someone can show you anything but its up to you to practice it. With that said, I'll give you a couple of basic lessons free seeing as you need something to do with your time. Cheers, Lucius

My dad taught me a lot of classic rock but at the time I wasn't very interested in anything "old". I wanted to learn new music I was interested in. Yeah, started with tabs but what really kicked it up was downloading a program named guitarpro. You download songs you want to learn and it shows you the fretboard of a guitar and red dots where you put your fingers. You can go step by step or just stream the song and play along while the red dots keep changing on the fretboard. It also has a piano and bass. Unfortunately, the record labels came down hard on most of the sites that offer these downloads over copyright but you can still get guitarpro tabs if you look hard enough. - Thu, 10 Sep 2009 11:35am

I fergot about GuitarPro, it is a good app. I dunno, to me learning guitar seems to be work, albeit I'll still dream jamming, my cousin used to be in a band called Soul City Exile, but I never went out of my way to learn the instrument it seems. - Fri, 11 Sep 2009 8:33pm

Took four lessons from a guy named John at Tempo Trend when I was 13, then I learned how to play some of my simpler favorite songs. After that, I started jamming with Krieg and it developed into a knack for putting riffs together on the fly with vocals strewn about. - Mon, 14 Sep 2009 6:03pm

I used to be enthusiastic about being in a band and the scene in general, then I lost the enthusiasm. I guess this is why learning an instrument seems like work to me, and if something is work it isn't as fun right? - Sun, 27 Sep 2009 1:27am

The thought would to work hard to learn something so it becomes easy. And when it becomes easy, then it's fun. - Sun, 27 Sep 2009 6:58pm
