Hi Guys (and girls),

We have a new Rehearsal / Recording facility currently being built and we would love some feedback from musicians here in town.

We have a couple rooms, but we are looking into the idea of supplying a backline (included) in one of our rooms.. (drums, bass amp, 2 guitars amps)

How many musicians/ bands would prefer using their own gear?

or

Would people prefer the ease of using a supplied backline.. to cut down on transport etc

...with quality equipment.

Love to get some feedback, and any other points you may have regarding rehearsal spaces, lounge ... coffee makers haha... anything.

For guitarists I would likely just use a supplied cab and bring my own head/effects etc..

Drums, I don't drum but I suspect most folks enjoy playing their own gear. Although I guess if they brought their own kick pedals it would feel somewhat similar.

A decent PA is always nice and where I would put my money if I were to run a jam spot.

I consider playing someone elses drums no different than a guitar player having to play someone else's guitar.

But I'd also do whatever I could to not have to use someone elses drums or to have to set up my drums each practice so I don't represent your typical customer. - Fri, 5 Jun 2009 1:50pm

For myself I would play through anything as long as it's a quality, loud tube amp, and I know our bass player's the same. But then again I'm not likely to need your services any time soon . . . unless we needed to do some intense workshopping, in which case it would be short term and not very profitable for you to supply and maintain quality gear.

If you're looking for long term tenants I would suggest supplying lockers for their gear. The long term regulars will be your bread and butter, and they'll be less of a hassle for you as well in terms of wear and tear and dropped obligations. . . - Fri, 5 Jun 2009 3:55pm

backline bass amp and drums would be a good idea, but the guitar amps is debatable.

If you have a good drum set, and a good bass amp, then the only thing people will have to put in storage/haul up the stairs will be guitar amps, which might not be that bad. Maybe having a couple cabs there would be a decent idea. - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 1:48am

I bus/walk/cycle everywhere and it really doesn't help when I need to travel somewhere for a jam. I've used Pro Jam Spaces with friends and rented their gear before and they had a really quiet fender combo. I think it'd be nice if you could keep at least a decent guitar half stack, bass half stack, basic drum kit, and PA on hand. I mean, it'd be nice if it could be something standard like a Marshall JCM 800 with 4x12" and an Ampeg SVT head with an Ampeg 8x10", but those might be out of your budget. - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 3:59am

Thanks so much for the feedback, .. it is great to hear all the ideas and would love to hear more !

I think a quality backline. (if needed) is very important.

what do you think would be the best Backline for amps, drums and bass?

...Jcm 800 would probably be a good option for a marshall... a fender twin might be a safe bet as well... ? - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 7:04pm

+1 SVT/810

Hard to pick between guitar amps where having a bunch of pedals is cool and amps where its cool to use no pedals.

Maybe if someone is biking to the jam spot they wont even wanna bring pedals. - Sun, 7 Jun 2009 11:17pm

I think a JCM800 and Fender Twin are the best options. Anyone too picky to use those will probably opt to bring their own rig regardless of what you supply. - Mon, 8 Jun 2009 10:14am

Will bands be able to store there gear there?
The jcm 800 is a great amp and the fender twin idea is good for people that need to clean up.
I know that a full drum kit would be a good thing to have around because if there are any bands that do the long distance thing and say the drummer lives in Vancouver or something like that, that person can walk on the a boat, swim, fly or teleport over to the island without having to bring a car.

For the bass the Ampeg is the way to go. - Mon, 8 Jun 2009 12:07pm
