I think bad mixing by the band(stage sound) or the sound guy is what kills live music for me. - Thu, 19 Mar 2009 12:22am

Too bad more live sets weren't recorded. - Tue, 24 Mar 2009 2:25am

I agree with that CHING.

My experiences are that local bands usually don't know how to make themselves sound their best on stage. Be it gear, knowing how to mix levels, not play too loud etc.

And when that is the case, the soundman usually won't be able to compensate nor do they even want to bother.

I see many professional touring bands that almost always sound awesome playing in clubs where local bands sound like poo.

I'll also add poor musicianship kills things for me almost instantly. - Tue, 24 Mar 2009 12:49pm

I'm pretty content with no sound check, a few half-stacks, a venue not meant for live sound, and a PA for only the vocals. but to each his own. - Wed, 25 Mar 2009 4:40pm

Wanna hear a good live recording? I recommend either Jerk Ward - All You Ears Can Here reunion (it surprises me how well you can grab a live recording from Logan's) or the latest Hanson Brothers live recording. Heck, I'd even recommend The Pixies - Live at the Curling Club. Recording should be as easy as it is in those recordings and sound just as good if not better. I chatted with someone from Camas about recording live gigs at that bookstore, it could be done (using 4 mics in a square formation). - Wed, 25 Mar 2009 6:36pm Edited: Wed, 25 Mar 2009 6:37pm

a live recording can be done anywhere. 4 mics aren't necessary for a good live recording and I don't even think it would suit camas since it's not like you'd aim to capture the poor acoustics of the space, as a 4 microphone configuration would likely do. recording purists believe that the best capture of a space is with two microphones (ORTF, for example). I've been doing in-ear binaural bootlegs that sound pretty good. I think most bars that record the live show (like logan's) just close-mic everything with a ton of mics. that's what's typically done for loud/amplified/rock music, especially since bars aren't designed with acoustics in mind and usually have huge problems with standing waves and nodes. then again, that brings in the problem of live mics usually being dynamic mics, and thus without the frequency response one would desire for the lows and highs. I'd like to hear the Jerk Ward recording though.

also I'd like people to notice how hypocritical this response is in comparison to my previous one about not caring how a live show sounds when in the audience. ha...ha...but the experience is different! live music is a visual and social experience. or something. part of why I do the binaural recordings is to just capture the memory, even if the mixing/acoustics are bad. just to relive the exact moments again. this is getting too deep. - Thu, 26 Mar 2009 2:35pm Edited: Thu, 26 Mar 2009 2:39pm

I'm glad you liked it Griph. It isn't what I would call top notch, it was a pretty rough and ready scenario for that show. I knew it was only going to be a documentary thing and not a release or anything. It would have been too chaotic to have brought down anything more complicated than a little rig.

IIRC it was a pair of PZMs and a stereo mix out of the board into four channels. (Then later mixed)

I'm partial to the 2 coincident pair mics (XY, ORTF whatever). The board feed can sometimes be useful to provide some clarity for things like the kick drum and vocals.

Many mics onstage to many tracks can work well, but it is also much more complicated and keeping it working perfectly can make you go grey early. - Tue, 7 Apr 2009 4:46pm

I remember seeing Sloan at Legends a couple years ago. The band was great, energetic and on top of their game. Problem: the sound guy cranked the vocals way loud and it hurt the ears. All in all, Legends had a lot of errors in sound mixing.

Then again, I was in a band one time that got kicked off the stage for being too loud...and we sucked too. So, that kills the mood, definitely. - Wed, 8 Apr 2009 11:12pm

I'd say that for %90 of the bigger touring acts, especially ones at Element/Legends, you can blame the band's personal sound guy cause that's who's mixing them. This was certainly the case for Sloan. - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 12:13am Edited: Fri, 10 Apr 2009 12:13am

Wow, really? Then he should be ashamed of himself. Or maybe I should. Kinda yelled at the band to turn the v0cals down and the sound guy too. I didn't even stay till the end because it was so dire. - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 1:00am

The only decent sounding show I ever witnessed at legends was Burning Spear. It was fantastic, had his own soundguy of course and he did not attempt to make it super loud, just righteous. - Wed, 29 Apr 2009 7:44am
