Well, since Slo doesn't appear to have started a subject on this topic after all I think I will.

Anybody interested in getting together once a month for a synth/musical instruments DIY here in Victoria post away.

I'm willing to get right in to it- and I know my neighbor will too. He's modded a few pedals from scrach, and built one too, so I think I can coax him in to putting together a small presentation on some topic or another with pedals. I'd be willing to put together something too.

We're both newbs though, so the more the merrier!

Any ideas on when/where? Breakfast first Sunday mornings of the month? Maybe a pub first Thursday or something of the month?

Suggestions welcome ;) - Tue, 13 Feb 2007 11:13am

You beat me to it!
I'm in, and I propose a room with power so we can demo a few things. I'm going to check on rooms tommorrow, library, things like that. Will keep you posted.

Here's the pitch I was working on:
"Just in time for Valentines day, it's time to profess my love for synths, more specifically diy synths, modular, and devices to aid these machines. I propose a monthly meet to trade ideas, sounds, stories, and tips. Anyone would be welcome, amatuer, professional, lookers, good lookers, speak'N'spell hackers, and people who want to do the DIY thing and build something from kit or from scratch. We could have a demo or two of something you have built. " - Tue, 13 Feb 2007 3:40pm

Cool. My neighbor said he'll bring some pedals and a speak n' spell he plans on bending at this first meet-up.

I'm not sure what I'd bring yet for first meeting. It would be good if we could get some synth-related people there too though- so it's not just about bending!

Let us know when you find a good venue, we'll work a date out from there. I'm thinking to aim for the first or second Sunday of each month would be good though, unless anyone has a better idea - Wed, 14 Feb 2007 10:52am

I've booked a meeting room @ the Emily Carr library for Thurs, March 1st, 7-9pm. Room holds 40.
Hope this fits with your schedule, let me know and I can change it, but it's only available Tues and Thur nights, which works for me 'cause I'm busy weekends. They wanted a name for the non-profit organization (you only pay half of the commercial rate), so I told them is was the Victoria Analog Enthusiasts and we hope to have regular meets.
Paid for it, cheap @ $21.20. Done deal. I have a few people to invite, so it should be fun. Just have to think of something for show and tell. - Wed, 14 Feb 2007 12:58pm

Wicked. I'll pick up the cost for the following month then. First Thursday of each month then? 7PM? That works for me. "The Victoria Analogue Enthusiasts" works.

That's the library downtown right? Can you post it's exact address, conference room number, and any other good details regarding it's location? I'll get a post going on MeetUp.com and anywhere else that could be a good place to "advertise".

My neighbor says he'll be "ranting about push-pulls and he'll circuit-bend his SK1 and Speak N' Spell". Should be fun! - Wed, 14 Feb 2007 10:18pm

Emily Carr Library is @ 3500 Blanshard, right by Save-On foods, plenty of parking. The meeting room is downstairs and there is only one.
I think we see how it goes, then take it from there. I would like to see the group take an anlog synth and modulars users kind of track, so slant the notice toward this if you agree.
Your neighbour has the honor of doing the first demo then, and I will bring something to fiddle with too.
I will put up a paper notices in a couple of likely places too. - Thu, 15 Feb 2007 2:01pm

Okay, I know the one. Um, someone should secure a speaker/monitor for the event. My monitors are a little too big to bring. - Sat, 17 Feb 2007 4:21pm

Have made one connection in town with a guy who has 2 modular setups! hope he can make it. - Sat, 17 Feb 2007 6:44pm Edited: Sat, 17 Feb 2007 6:45pm

Hi, I've noticed your postings for the victoria analog enthusiasts and it sounds compelling. I'm certainly interested in your list of things (above) but haven't ever done any of this. Is this a geek-out (no offense intended) or would the un-initiated feel welcome? - Sat, 17 Mar 2007 3:31pm Edited: Sat, 17 Mar 2007 3:34pm

Well, this event already passed, but we're having a second one.

It was a bit of geeking out, but we had at least one guy there who was pretty new to it all and I think he enjoyed himself quite a bit.

There was some historical/technical talk, but also just playing around with the toys everybody brought in, and talking about the kind of music we work on.

The next meet-up:

May 3rd, 2007
Emily Carr Library, 3500 Blanshard Ave. 7-9pm

I'm pretty sure someone is bringing a fully modular system in with them too. I'm thinking I'll bring my Juno 60, and my neighbor will probably bring in some of his home-made pedals (or his Casio SK1 again, if he manages to finish the patchbay he's making for it by then).

Hope to see you there! - Sat, 17 Mar 2007 5:29pm

I really want a juno 60. sigh. maybe I'll come to this. do you guys know about uvic's buchla modular synthesizer? - Sat, 17 Mar 2007 5:33pm

I can't blame you, I love my Juno 60.

UVic has Buchla modular? UVIC HAS A BUCHLA MODULAR? Shit. How to I get to play with that thing? Do you have to be a certain year student to get access to it? Do they have an electronic music course there? TELL ME MORE!

Oh yeah, do you kow what series it is?

See here for more on series:

To my knowledge, you have to be enrolled in a course that gives you access to the electronic music lab. I've played with the Buchla, and it was one of the greatest moments of my life.

They have a few computer music classes. I took two. Fucking do it. - Sun, 18 Mar 2007 3:40pm

I forget the series but I don't think it's any of the ones in that link. Was there a 300 series maybe that doesn't have information online or something? I know UVic's had it for decades and apparently it's priceless now but they keep it around because it's such a great learning tool for the past of synthesis. I believe taking the class MUS307 or MUS407 entitles you to use it. http://uvic.ca/calendar should have some information on those courses. There's actually a project in MUS307 where we have to write a song for the Buchla. So annoying switching between patches because it's all done with wires but it's still a lot of fun. - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 1:10am

I believe the Buchla 300 is a rhythm computer designed for use with Buchla modular systems.

I'm seriously considering taking those courses! It doesn't look like there is many requirements either, aside from permission from the school itself.

Eeeee... BUCHLA! - Wed, 21 Mar 2007 12:25pm

Yeah I don't know the series then. MUS307 requires an online application describing your musical history (past musical courses taken, private instruction with music teachers, etc), plus I think you have to have taken MUS306 or MUS207. It's usually limited to csc/music combined major students, electrical engineers, and music majors... but then again I'm a creative writing student doing a music minor, haha. - Wed, 21 Mar 2007 1:47pm

uhm looks like this, its a 200. The long dead Martin Bartlett drove to SF in a microbus and bought three at Don Buchla's garage sale, for music profs running labs in Canada. - Thu, 22 Mar 2007 10:46pm

Anaki: Selling you that Juno is quickly becoming the biggest regret of my life... not a day goes by I don't kick myself over it... I can't even listen to my own music anymore without tearing up! :P

Anyways, I hope you're giving her all the love she deserves & then some... DON'T EVER SELL HER! (unless you sell her back to me, of course! :P) - Mon, 26 Mar 2007 5:16pm

Sorry 'bout the late reply. I've been on vacation.

MACTAC: I know I, as well as several others, would be delighted if you were to bring your MOTM modular or Doepfer or both!

THE BOX DRONE: Your Juno 60 is in good hands, and very much loved. In the unlikely event that I do sell it, I'll let you know, as at least then I could be sure it would have a loving home! - Mon, 2 Apr 2007 10:57am

Well, I feel like shite knowing now that people went to this last Thursday.

There is an e-mail address setup for a mailing list, but I'm at work so I can't access it right now. It keeps people updated as to the happenings of the group though.

We don't really "perform"- well, some people do, if they show off their equipment, or are playing with someone else's. We tend to show off some equipment and expertise if we brought anything, and we discuss tips, tricks, mods, and technical stuff. It's sort of like a "fan club", if you will. There's alot of talk about how to do certain things, or what sort of things you can do with specific equipment. Even though it's "analogue", there was alot of discussion about software last time too. Though no one brought CD's of any of their music, I'd encourage that too.

I'm afraid you'll have to elaborate upon this Ministry Of Casual Living. What kind of event is this? Who's playing? Etc. Our "group" is a small group of enthusiasts, but I might be willing to lend a helping hand depending on the sort of event it is.

Just to clarify, again, the next meetup is the following, and it's looking as though is it's going to have expanded upon the original quite a bit:
May 3rd, 2007
Emily Carr Library, 3500 Blanshard Ave. 7-9pm - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 11:26am

the ministry of casual living is a artist run gallery on hualtain st. we have managed to keep afloat for the last 5 years, but have hit a rocky patch. we are throwing fundraisers to help pay the rent. we are looking for original acts and you guys look great. i picture a few of you bringing down some of your gear and showing it off....tell us a bit about it ....and invite everyone to join you on may 3rd.
last month we had The Imps (experimental), Final SSpin (noise), The great Giffoni with The Queen (magic) and Run Chico Run (fun)....we don't have a confirmed line up for the 19th or the 30th but i can guarantee analog appreciation if you decide to join the show.

feel free to give a call if want to discuss any of this ..... 920-3688 - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 10:01pm Edited: Fri, 6 Apr 2007 10:03pm
