Hi,
I want to know if anyone has any info on CD consignment in stores in Victoria. Is everyone in need of a distribution deal instead?

Thanks for the info.

HMV stopped doing consignment a few years ago, but all the little local guys do it. Lyles is easy, you just bring 2 CDs at first and fill out a little form and just go back and get your money and if you sell CDs decently you can give them more (they obviously don't want 10 CDs if you're only ever gonna sell one). Ditch can be picky I hear. A&B will do it as long as you have a barcode on it and are willing to do a little paperwork. I don't know about many of the other little shops like Golden records and stuff unfortunately, but hopefully that gets you started. - Thu, 15 Feb 2007 5:09pm

I tried Ditch & Lyles & they say they dont realy do that anymore. Maybe I shouldn't have told them we had been Band of the Month on the zone haha.

I will check the others.

Lyle's not doing consignment?!? Interesting... Oh I know why they told you that, if your band isn't known or the CD doesn't sell they'd rather not use space they could use for a product that sells. But you could try selling a few CDs there and see what happens. - Mon, 19 Feb 2007 4:34pm Edited: Mon, 19 Feb 2007 4:37pm

Yeah, he could try to sell a few CDs there. The problem is they wouldn't let him do it.

maybe not the most honest way to get your album in a shop:
you can try asking your friends to go into lyle's and ask for your album by name. record stores usually make a few dollars off of the sale, and they end up with a happy customer.

just an idea. selling at shows doesn't hurt either, and your album sounds really good: so, i'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to sell a few. - Wed, 21 Feb 2007 2:57pm

Yeah, Goldie shut down in the summer...

In order to get stocked in most record stores, you need to have some form of official distribution. Smaller shops, however, will often take local records on consignment - last I heard, both Lyle's and Ditch were still accepting local releases, but I guess that's changed. That seems a little odd to me, though - Victoria's got a pretty healthy music scene, so you'd think it would be worth their while to carry local, unsigned artists. The record shop I work at here in Ottawa has a policy of accepting pretty much anything local, and the music community has really taken notice of this - since we're supporting the artists, they'll support us in turn. Maybe things are different in Victoria, but this strategy seems to be working quite well so far... - Wed, 21 Feb 2007 5:52pm

I'm pretty sure Lyles and Ditch still DO accept consignment, but only if they have an idea that they will eventually sell. You have to sell your music to them a bit as well, not just say "ok, I'll go away now". They're only making a buck or two each one, so its sometimes easier to say NO.

I notice both shops aren't anxious to take too many units at one time, given the typical lack of space, etc. Anyway, both stores have been kind to People's War, but then again we have Tony Goluza and Scott Henderson, so I would imagine that helps.
.
ak has a perfectly good technique, there is no dishonesty about it. Get all your friends, over a period of time to request it and then a week later when you try to drop off units, they will have at least heard the name and will in all likelyhood take a couple.

Getting your friends to request your product certainly helps. It's hard to get a sense of what will sell and what won't. For every local title that there is a demand for there are probably 10 to 12 titles that don't sell worth shit. It's hard to commit space in large amounts to titles that are simply going to sit in your bins for months and months when space is at a premium. Also, packaging is important as CDRs look cheap as do poorly made photocopy booklets. Putting your CD in a cardboard slip sleeve instead of doing up a jewel case with booklet may save you money but it will also drastically cut your possiblities of sales as they get lost in between all the jewel cases. - Thu, 22 Feb 2007 12:04am

I chatted with Jamie about this (I figured what the hell), he said they still do local consignment, but there not gonna stock product that doesn't sell (makes sense, to me at least). So perhaps you could consign a few CDs, and if they sell then consign some more CDs. It doesn't hurt to try right? - Mon, 26 Feb 2007 7:01pm Edited: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 7:02pm

I like the look of cardboard cases much better so I don't know about that.

sell your music in the internets... odds are, your disc is pretty niche, and your friends are the ones looking to buy it. So sell it direct. - Tue, 27 Feb 2007 8:38am

RIP Goldie... He had that sign in the window: "New stock tuesday," for months... I went back every tuesday to see if he'd re-opened yet. Apparently he couldn't keep both his record stores open so he was going to move is Vancouver stock to Victoria. But I guess it was the other way around. A little off topic, but that was the best music store in Victoria. ever. - Thu, 1 Mar 2007 11:04am

Aidan, you're right about that. Sadly it was open at a time when I wasn't expanding my collection. It was a shitty location, too. - Thu, 29 Mar 2007 11:12am

Thanks for all the responses.

We do have our CD on CDBaby.com & it is being prepped for Digital distribution(itunes etc).

It's funny that a few years ago we were able to have HMV A&B Sound & whatever local owned shops Lyles Place etc. happy to stock(on consignment).

I know that sales are down for CDS period.
That likely has something to do with it.

I am going to put together a package for the stores to see if we can convince them to keep a copy.

I would be happy to say "thanks for coming to the show, you can pick up a copy tonight at the merch table or any time from the good poeple @ Ditch" or whatever.

Wwe'll see how it goes.
