Hey everybody!

I just put together some gear to try my hand at running a mastering studio.

I've been mastering my own stuff (I'll post some samples soon) and some stuff for some friends (American Geography, Jackie and the Reckless Abandon and Ghosts).

Because I'm just starting out, I don't have the most spectacular setup, but with everyone's help, I'll be able to upgrade soon!

I'm starting off with introductory rates of $25/song or 5 songs for $100.

Drop me a line via email at thomas.sr 'at' gmail.com

Tyler,

It was the 2002 Tour EP when I used to play bass, back when they/we were a lot more rock. Back then, I was just starting to understand the process of mastering.

It's a crazy loud mix and last summer, I remastered it to make it even louder and punchier and with a better soundstage.

I'll ask the guys if it's OK for me to post MP3s of their stuff so you can have some samples. - Wed, 30 Aug 2006 12:32am

Does it really cost that much money to get stuff mastered per song?!? So much for working on Mission of Christ. - Wed, 30 Aug 2006 11:41am

Griphin,

That rate is actually lower than almost everything I could find through a simple Google search for 'mastering studio rates'. Some of the big studios charge $150/track (though they DO have hundreds of thousands of dollars of gear).

The bonus of being local, you can drop by and we can sit down together and work out what your vision of the project is. You don't have to send off your raw tracks and hope for the best. If you don't like the work, I can make changes and have it back to you within a day or two.

If you have a large amount of stuff for mastering, we could probably work out a rate for a whole project.

Drop me a line. You never know what we can whip up.

Nod, I know. The only thing stopping me is not having access to the equipment you need. - Wed, 30 Aug 2006 6:22pm

Mastering is very misunderstood..$150 a song?
Try More Like $5000 for a proper job on an album! - Wed, 30 Aug 2006 10:08pm Edited: Wed, 30 Aug 2006 10:08pm

Laprider, I totally agree. Lacquer Channel in Ontario charges $150/song but I don't think that includes the engineer.

I'm hoping that, in time, my reputation will help me afford the gear to do the quality jobs that can cost $5000. But I still plan to do the smaller jobs. The way I see it, just because there isn't a huge budget, it doesn't mean your album has to sound like it.

Please keep your comments coming guys, every bit of input helps!

PS. I should have some sample work posted by the end of the week. - Wed, 30 Aug 2006 11:34pm

You should track down Marc Franklin...he is the cities only " real" mastering guy, or was.
I think he still has his sonic solutions rig. He is a super nice guy and full of info, I'm sure you could search his info on here. - Thu, 31 Aug 2006 12:10am

I'm not sure Mark's status. I know he still does stuff, but Media Magic seems to be no more, and I had a devil of a time finding an email addresses or phone number for the man.

He still uses the Sonic Solutions rig I understand, but he's been dabbling in video more than pure audio in recent times. I tell you those Sonic units are pretty fuckin' sexy, even in todays world of heavy computer systems and plug-ins, etc.

I agree laprider. Mark appears to be the only local with serious platinum gear and the experience to back it up. As far as Victoria productions go you wont find anyone else listed as often for Mastering services. (Not on good recordings anyway)

The one with Fanfare For Lady Myopia and all that on it?

Is there any way I could get my hands on the remastered version? That's probably my favourite album by any local band. - Thu, 31 Aug 2006 1:28pm

In my experience, if you want a proper mastering job you have to leave the island and head east...but only as far as Vancouver. One of the new hotshots over there is a fellow by the name of Greg Reely who works out of Green Jacket Studios. I don't think he's charging $5000 per album, but it is easy to pay that much if you want a top notch job done. Very few people who claim to be mastering engineers seem to have the slightest clue what constitutes mastering. Also, you gotta have the gear...big money!
Best of luck to you. Perhaps you could become the first real mastering guy to live here and actually do proper mastering. - Sun, 3 Sep 2006 8:28pm Edited: Sun, 3 Sep 2006 9:03pm
