Okay, so besides the given answer of "having really good music," what (in your opinion) makes a band great?

I've been thinking about this convinced that it's a pretty simple question but then decided it's really not, as the answer is probably different for everyone.

I play guitar in a band called "Conrad Come Home" and we're playing our first show at Belle's Bar tonight. We started the group with the intent of it being a pretty serious project, so we're doing what we can to make our debut awesome, but i'm curious to know what everyone else thinks it takes. - Sat, 27 May 2006 9:37am

Its a broad question but I agree with Dr.Vee, but use WOOL socks. That way you're sure to move around all the time.

1. Never do anything half ass. I think this applies to your CD's especially. Make a demo to hand out to other bands to land shows and maybe close friends, but when it comes to your EP, SAVE UP, WAIT and record with someone like infinity studios. DONT GO CHEAP. Same goes for your t-shirts, promo, and gear. Refer to #2.

2. music costs money, but it pays shit.
look at your initial costs for lets say a bass player.
ampeg 4x10 cab= 1000
ampeg svt 3 pro head = 1200
bass = 500-1000
strings = 50 (5 string)
tuner = 100
cables = 100
TOTAL 2250-2750

Then there's monthly costs of strings, picks, batteries, lost cables, new toys and what not.
I guess what I am saying is:
BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR GOALS IN PROPORTION TO YOUR PAY

3. Kinda back to the "do nothing half ass", STAGE PRESENCE.
Everyone is different. Hardcore is not going to emulate Maurice's style. Nuvo wavo has their own groove for their style (and so good good good it is). I've heard this one story that I still can't get over.
Kincaide played at comosun or UVIC for a beer garden thing and there was like 40 people MAYBE and their might have been 10 people paying attention. None the less, they threw it down like there was 10,000 people.
GOOD OR BAD, ALWAYS PLAY YOUR BEST AND HARDEST CAUSE IF YOU GOT THAT ONE FAN, IT MADE IT ALL WORTH WHILE.

4. Have set lists, I hate it wahen bands talk on stage about what they are going to do next.

5. Have a tuner, anything... please. I reccoment one of boss' chromatic tuners or korg's DT-10's

6. DONT HAVE DEAD NOISE.
strings break, shit fucks up and you have to buy time. Talk while one instumentalists play a little funk line or impro. Tell em about your website, merch, cd, how the band met, how drunk you got last night. SOMETHING.

7. Always be the bigger band.
You're gonna get fucked somewhere. It's enevitable. A band, a promoter, a venue and you're going to be pissed about it. BUt be bigger. Dont come on livevic and bitch or put people down, cause it ain't gonna earn you any cool points. Just grit your teeth and know that you're better for knowing and doing so.

8. No one likes a rock star.
Talk to people after. Don't be a dick and think you're too cool for the people who were watching you. ALL AGES shows included. Some kid comes up to you and says, "You like such n'n such a band?" Even if you lost your job that day and found your GF F*&^ing your best friends, talk to the guy/girl.

9. people that help you
friends, fans and strangers may help you at times. Don't forget that thank them too.

10. misc.
be crazy on stage
have fun
smile
bring all extras you may need for a show. rent another axe if nessesary for big shows.
have a myspace. people will want to know when your next show is
talk to the sound guy. let him know the details of your band with out being a bitch. i.e- quiet singers, screamo, crappy DI on your bass rig, ephisis on toms etc.

Creativity, and doing something new and different. Make yourself stand out so you'll never be forgotten. Kick out the same old, same old.

Also, interact with each other on stage and with the audience. Both the band and the crowd will appreciate it. - Sat, 27 May 2006 3:57pm

Its different to everyone what makes a band awesome:

To promoters/venues/soundguys:
They help promote their shows, they have at least one semi-reliable guy as point person for their band, they don't demand more beer from the stage like assholes, they don't swipe shit at the end of the night, they don't huck/smash beer bottles into the monitors or jam mics up into bad places, they don't blame them when no one shows up, they don't talk shit about them or their bar all over town and then come back asking for shows.

To jamspace roomies:
They pick up their empties, quit switching/swiping patch chords, quit messing with other people's gear, quit leaving spent strings all over the floor the vaccuums can't get, pay their rent on time, and air out the room a bit and find some deodorant you smelly heathens...

To b?/girlfriends:
They wipe themselves off after a set, and BEFORE they slime up all over you, they get jobs at least occasionally and pay their way, they don't play out the bitter unrecognized genius thing, they don't leave mangled messes of cords all over the bedroom floor or accidently leave record buttons on.... .

To magazines/radio stations/media etc:
They don't send a boring new press pak every week, they don't call or e-mail every day, they don't get all huffy and threatening if they don't get a call back, they actually RETURN calls when its time, whoever's agreed to be there shows up, they don't get so wasted they can't talk, they don't make things uncomfortable by bitching about other bands/promoters/venues who are sponsors/advertisers, they don't hate them after the fact cuz someone didn't choose their "good side"..

- Be fucking loud.
- Don't try to get "big".
- Play more on the level, low-key shows. Be up front with the audience. If you're playing every show like rockstars, no thanks.
- When you play live, be fucking wreckless if it calls for it. The best band i've seen live played two songs, then destroyed their gear.
- Don't release albums/eps every chance you get. Wait a bit between releases.
- Play shows enough that you're known, but not so much that you're playing every weekend.
- WRITE INTERESTING SONGS. - Sat, 27 May 2006 10:58pm

Place three long 1x8s down on the very front of the stage. Each 1x8 should have at least a good ten or so holes in them, in which you can insert a jiffy marker - felt up, cap off. Place a whole bunch of fans (of the electric kind, not your f.o.b.s) behind this rig so that they're blowing out to the crowd.
a.) turn on fans
b.) start playing
c.) everyone will think you're quite awesome. - Tue, 30 May 2006 7:44am Edited: Tue, 30 May 2006 7:45am

Oh and another thing, every band i`ve ever been in has one guy that "noodles" on stage, usually a geetar player that goes on stage when no one else is there and noodles on his guitar. The crowd then senses the band is coming out even though the bass player is still putting on make-up and the drummer is having his nervous shit . Noodlers should be kicked in the nuts if you have one, and also have lots of props and crap on stage so when you make a mistake no one notices cuz they`re busy looking at blinky things. - Tue, 30 May 2006 4:58pm

ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS!!!

this was something that i totally forgot.

Too many young bands follow what they see too blindly.
Never be too afraid to ask another band a question or two. Just dont post here either. Email a band or person and find out first hand.
Information is free but can be worth a fortune.

First and foremost you need a rediculously awesome band name like Big Muff, Jell, Hours Before Dawn or Cypher. Once you have an amazing band name it's pretty much a given that your band will totally rule. Also a good band needs lot's and lot's of stickers. Jell has tons. They are everywhere and everytime I see a toilet with a jell sticker on it or a homeless guy passed out with a jell sticker stuck to him it reminds me of how awesome they are. Also, you need a wireless guitar so you can wank-solo through the audience. It just looks so cool. Man, I'm gonna go Jam right now. - Mon, 24 Jul 2006 1:39pm Edited: Mon, 24 Jul 2006 1:40pm
