Hi there! My friend and I performed our first burlesque show this past weekend at Rebirth's Dream Boudoir party and we are hooked! The two of us are thinking of putting together a short burlesque review which could serve well as an opening act for bands here in town. I'm just doing a bit of preliminary market research to see what kind of demand there might be for this kind of thing. Also, would you prefer to see a traditional burlesque act with classic tunes, or would you like to see a neo-burlesque act, maybe a bit edgier, with more modern music? Thanks in advance for any input.

For further inquiries please feel free to email me. - Thu, 18 May 2006 2:08pm

Nobody can emulate the way burlesque used to be, a shame really. You and your friend should study the way it should be and come out with a stage show that people say good things about. It's an art form, right? Though I'm sure people would be interested if you guys emulated a show similar to the Voodoo Dolls that work with Big John Bates (that shit's dope!!!). I've always missed good burlesque ever since I started watching the Strippers in town (and even then you just don't see decent shows in town anymore). - Thu, 18 May 2006 3:19pm

If you do it, and I recomend that you go for it, my advice would be to make it, as part of its mandate, a body-positive, empowering (as much as that term sounds jargony), and flat-out feminist. A diverse range of looks, sizes, colours, sexualities, so on. I think there's a huge demand for ways to look at naked ladies (mostly) free of guilt at participating in patriarchal and objectifying power relations. If you manage to get that right, you'll have as many (if not more) women at your shows as/than men. I suspect that would be a lot more rewarding an audience to play to, besides.

Musically, I think your best bet is to go for new music that captures the spirit and to some degree the sound of old-school burlesque. Maybe mix in some of the old shit. But I would avoid new music that doesn't capture that spirit and look and sound and all that. - Thu, 18 May 2006 4:50pm

It wouldn't hurt to have a classical set & a neo set now would it? You could offer a choice... variety is the spice of life after all! - Fri, 19 May 2006 2:58pm

Thanks, everybody, for your input! My friend and I will work on putting our set together. Maybe we will do a couple classic numbers as well as some neo-burlesque, as it sounds as though there is a demand for both. Please feel free to contact me if anyone is interested in having us open for them, or perform a short set at any kind of event (well, unless it's like a NAMBLA conference or something - though I couldn't really see why they'd want to hire us anyways). We're rarin' to go!

I have one tale to tell of a recent experience with the pseudo-burlesque.

I went to see an old buddy of mine play music at Belles lounge, under Syn on Yates. Its a funky little room, and while there are physical issues with the space as far as musical acts go, its a pretty cool and laid-back place to spend an evening.

I had heard previous to this show that the wait-staff are dressed in very skimpy lingerie. Initially I thought this *might* be a grand idea. However, not long after setting up, it became clear that this was a failed attempt at offering something unique. I think the original concept was designed as a tasteful attempt at burlesque, but while interacting in that environment I was increasingly sorry for these girls working away in that attire. Also there was a secondary issue of feeling that the management had made a decision ahead of time that guys like me would be completely overtaken with this idea. I think it deameaned both sexes.

I don't wish to diss belles itself or the girls working there, I just think it might be a good example of what to avoid.

KnifeGhost has already indicated a very similar idea. Perhaps substitute alcohol for Hashish and all will be well in your plan... Also, keep the women in charge, rather than having them serve drinks or taking orders from 'the man' you know what I mean? - Fri, 19 May 2006 9:53pm Edited: Fri, 19 May 2006 10:04pm

Monk's right on. I love the atmosphere at Belle's Bar, but the hot-waitresses-in-lingerie doesn't really play. It feels like a failed (and ultimately off-putting) attempt to capture the Cabaret feeling.

Of course, that this show is run by women (specifically, the performers themselves), that dynamic is at least lessened. I think more women you have in your audience (and I maintain that if you get this right, it'll be at least half women) the better everyone will feel about it. Except if there are some shady dudes who just wanna look at boobs, and get intimidated by the fact that there are women in the audience, and all that stuff. But you don't want them there anyways.

I get the impression that you don't want to capture the otherwise-would-go-to-Monty's-or-the-Red-Lion audience. You want the not-interested-in-Monty's-or-the-Red-Lion-and-frankly-a-bit-disgusted-by-the-idea-but-love-women-and-love-looking-at-them-and-love-a-good-show-besides audience.

Another bonus about getting the right kind of crowd (respectful, sex- and body-positive, good mix of sexualities (straight men, straight women, lesbians, gay men, asexual genderqueers, strictly monogamous vanilla transmen, polyamourous pansexuals, everyone), interested in the show and not just the boobs, so on) is that the crowd will police itself. Jerk and dickheads won't last long.

This sounds cool. Go for it. Keep us posted. - Sat, 20 May 2006 12:01pm

I'll see if I can find any "polygamous hermaphroditic ambisexual cyclopian unisexuals" for our show, but somehow, I doubt it. If I do though, we'll have to charge a mint to perform; I mean, where else could you go to see this kind of thing? Granted, it would be a bit of a niche market... - Sun, 21 May 2006 7:00pm

Well, they don't have to perform, as long as they'd feel welcome in the audience.

Anyways, you get the idea. The more diverse the performers and the crowd, the easier it will be to avoid the old bunch-of-guys-leering-at-naked-girls thing. I'd imagine it'd be a lot more rewarding for the performers, too.

But above all, I would recommend it to put together a show that you feel really good about, music and costumes and schtick that you like, so on. Make a show that you yourself would want to go see. And don't worry about what other people wnat to see out of it. Do it to please yourself, get out there and do gigs for the sake of getting onstange, and the audience will follow. - Sun, 21 May 2006 7:24pm

Well, we're not really "pudgy" but we do have some good curves. Think 50's pin-up models. I'm not into stick-figure women either.

Of course, we intend to do a show that we feel good about. It's not like there's a lot of money to be made in burlesque anyways, especially not enough to make it worth "selling out". If I wanted to do that, I'd just be a stripper. It'd be mostly for fun, with the added bonus of a bit of spending money. - Sun, 21 May 2006 10:53pm

Well, I've got three different projects on the go at the moment, so I'm pretty darn busy. Which is good, but it means I don't get everything done as fast as I'd like to.

So far, my friend and I have put together three numbers. One (a group number) is pretty much your classic burlesque, one (my friend's number) is like a classic burlesque number to modern music, and one (mine) is kind of a more modern, fetishy number (set to Bjork's "Army of Me", no less).

Speaking of burlesque, we are looking for gigs, so if anybody needs an opening act, or would be interested in hiring us for a bachelor party or something, give me a shout.

In addition to the burlesque thingy, I'm also on the admin board (and, yes, a model) of a new erotica website (DeadlyDarlings.com) which should be launched, hopefully, in early July. It will kind of be like a Suicide Girls type thing, but less evil and with more emphasis on themed shoots. My friend and I will likely be performing some burlesque at the launch party. I'll post it up here when we've decided on a date.

I'm also doing a bit of editing work for the lovely and talented Nev of LiveVictoria.com. Wheeeee!

Hope everybody is having a lovely June, so far! - Fri, 2 Jun 2006 3:18pm Edited: Fri, 2 Jun 2006 3:26pm

If by "themed" you mean "in the style of Playboy circa 1970" you'll be my new best friend.

And you might get more success approaching venues directly, as a headliner, and getting bands to open for you. Other than that you may not have enough material for it yet, it seems like the kind of thing that works best as an event, as a main attraction.

It might also be worth looking into getting other people who do fun non-music things to share the stage with. Maybe in the classic variety show style. Some music, some burlesque, some (good) stand-up, some so on. - Fri, 2 Jun 2006 11:27pm

I'm a huge fan of burlesque and so I'd love to see more of it around town! I really admire anyone with the courage to go up and strut their stuff without massive quantities of alchohol, amazin. The variety type show is always a good idea, sorta in the spirit of vaudeville...and all ages shows are always good cause then I could go..yeah! - Sat, 3 Jun 2006 12:12am

Thanks for the support, Knifeghost and Kay. I think the variety show is a good idea too. I'll put some thought into who I know that would be a good addition to the show.

Kay, i think all-agers are a great concept and I support the scene wholeheartedly. However - and maybe I'm old-fashioned here - I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of taking my clothes off in front of 14 year old boys. I'd also hate to cause worries for any parents and have them ban their kids from future shows.

Eat your spinach, grow fast, and I'll see you at one of our shows in a few years. ;) - Sat, 3 Jun 2006 12:39pm

Well, the little duo act thing didn't end up panning out - my friend is moving to Toronto *sob*. However, if you want to see the two of us perform, come out to this show! Capital City Cheesecakes, live at Lucky Bar, Tuesday July 25th. Doors at nine, tickets at the door. This is your last chance to see Charlie Voodoo and the ravishing Rani Rhinestone perform together before Rani is claimed by the Big Smoke!

See you there, boys. *wink* - Fri, 14 Jul 2006 12:33am Edited: Fri, 14 Jul 2006 12:35am
