Hey all,

Inspired by the courageous DTJackson, I've decided to put up my own myspace for you to critique, and offer feedback on. The style of music ranges, at times folky, other times a little more...mellow. I sing and play all instruments, with the exception of the drums. I know the quality of the recordings is shotty at best, but I'm more interested in hearing critiques on the music itself. http://www.myspace.com/tallcansmusic

Let me know what you think, and thanks in advance. - Wed, 14 Oct 2009 5:02pm

(You are in a) small town: The song is catchy. The recording is actually good. I like it. I would have preferred it with just the on vocal track. I think it's overkill. The song could work with just one voice and one guitar. I think it would improve the intimitacy.

I Did Wrong: Maybe I just don't like banjos. I like them in other bands but for some reason it clashes for me. This could be a southern tinged rock song. Your voice is good and the back ups work here well. And your drummer is great, haha. I like the looseness. I've always liked the human aspect of music. More about feeling than precision.

February: Pleasant. No complaints. Kinda just rolls by. KInd of like the month itself.

So, there is my courageous review. I'd do more but I'm tired, ha. - Fri, 16 Oct 2009 1:40am

I thought that the songs were generally good. I know that you aren't really looking for critiques on the recording quality, but, I felt that the snare drum in They Say was too loud, and it rally turned me off of the song (I couldn't even listen to the whole thing). Also, I thought I heard a little mandolin thing giong on in the back ground of February which, while not bad, I felt wasn't really necessary for the song which may in fact be better off without that part. Other than that, I truly enjoyed listening to this music.

OK - first off you have some really pleasant stuff here, so my comments are going to be more picky.
I happen to love tremolo, so that's awesome.

Small Town;
I find it takes a bit long to get into, you might consider cutting the intro by half.
The first line (once I went back and listened closer) I believe is "Got a heart of old"? . . . but it sounds like "Got a heart of Gold, and it pines for you". Really not a strong line, and considering how exposed your music is you really HAVE to have a strong opening line that makes the listener want to stick around. Otherwise you risk the listener cringing at a perceived cliche.
Lastly, you have more than half a minute at the end that does nothing. Most listeners will likely just skip ahead, so save them the effort and cut it.

Pascal;
I was going to note that I feel you need to use more abstract/ noise sounds in your palette, but this song started with a bit of that in the background, which is nice. It's always good to include synthetic sounds with this type of music, I find, to avoid sounding too 'Canadian'

I Did Wrong;
It sounds like you're pushing your voice harder than you can go in some areas. The guitar solo is awkward and goes nowhere. There's too much guitar noodling - I suggest riffing on a theme instead meandering. I would avoid lines about cold beer and whisky . . . that's kind of a cliche in the country-folk realm.
Basically this song just kind of sits there for me; nice, but . . .

February;
I like how it starts, sonically that is. I think you need to hit some drums (especially kick) by the 1 minute mark.... but this strikes me as more of a demo recording so . . . . where the cymbals etc come in later would be where I would go wall of sound, including some of DTJacksons' noise shite.

That's all I have time for, hope that helps. Really quite good in my opinion. - Tue, 20 Oct 2009 12:09am

Personally, I couldn't get through a single song without skipping ahead to see if ANYTHING interesting was happening somewhere. No energy of any sort...sounds to me like a guy with a guitar, going through the motions. I gotta ask...what are you trying to acheive with these songs? Mots people who ask people to critique their stuff, usually do so because they think their stuff is pretty good, and want people to reinforce that. I don't get it... I just don't see anything here. - Tue, 20 Oct 2009 7:55am

Thanks to everyone who replied, your input is definitely valuable, even you T. Depression. I'll respond to a few things:

Superslacks, the opening line in Small Town is "I've got a heart of oak", which has a few different meanings. And yeah, I am not that solid of a lead player, because my solos are rambling and lack structure, and I'm trying to work on that.

T.Depression, I didn't put my stuff up here to reinforce some opinion I already hold about my music, I'm trying to get some feedback and critiques on my music, so I can know what areas I might want to improve upon. As far as what I was trying to achieve, these are just demos that I'm using to get some ideas down.

Thanks for listening, everyone. - Tue, 20 Oct 2009 7:21pm

A heart of oak . . . . pines . . . . oh, a pun! I get it now.

T.D. lives in bizarro world; he likes shit and despises anything that takes talent or effort to create (secretly though I occasionally agree with him) . . . at least he demonstrates why you need a thick skin in order to put your music out there. - Tue, 20 Oct 2009 10:01pm

Nobody who's serious about making music that matters to THEM, puts their shit up, asking people on some messageboard to critique it. You put things up for one of three reasons. 1.You're just trying to get the word out, and this is just a way to get a buncha people to listen to your stuff. 2.You KNOW your stuff is radm and just want other people to tell you it is too. 3.You really want othere people to tell you what you're doing right or wrong, so that you can make changes.

I guess #1 makes senses, but the other two are bullshit. Who cares what other people think? Are you playing music for them? Are you trying to play what THEY want to hear? I listened to all your songs a day or two agomm and can;t remember a single thing about them except for the fact that they were painfully boring. So what....does my oppinion change anything about your music? Does anyone elses? - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 8:10am

I have no idea what "radm" is.

T I couldn't agree with you more!

It's like when you go on these idiot rants, and I'm thinking you do it for one of three reasons;

1) You're jealous of anyone who can actually make decent music or play a musical instrument, or
2) You've seen so much great music in your life all this amature 'shit' just pales, or
3) You love the attention when people call you on your shit.

I figure #1 makes the most sense because we all know you can't play, . . . and I've probably seen more great shows than you've had hot lunches so #2 is out. #3 is just so sad I hope for your sake it isn't true. - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 10:11am

Being able to play a musical instrument and making decent music are two entirely different things...I am occasionally jealous of people who are able to write and play great music...because I will never be able to do the same. I've never been jealous of anyone who could play their instrument though...cause that doesn't mean shit. Take Victoria, for instance...hundreds of talented musicians...but very few worthwhile bands to watch.

I have seen alot of amazing music in my life...hundreds of bands over the past 25 years that have blown my mind. Does amature shit pale in comparison? Of course not...most of the stuff that blew my mind was "amature shit".

Do I like the attention? A couple of posts on a messageboard calling me a moron isn't gonna do much to lift my spirits or boost my ego...still better than getting a box full of demo CD's thrown through my living room window necause I gave a band a bad review though... - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 11:21am

Not only did they throw a box full of CD's through my window...but they threw a box of THEIR CD's through my window! They drove up at 3 or 4AM...took the time to conceal themselves by putting plastic shopping bags over their heads, and then thried to throw the CD's through the window. The first time they tried, it bounced off the window...that's what woke me up. I was looking through the window to see what was up, when they made their second attempt. I walked outside as they were getting into their car, and got the licence plate #. I opened up the box of CD's and was surprised that a band that I had trashed only the day before, had actually thrown their OWN CD's through my window.

I ended making about $600 off the incident...I got an estimate of what it would costs to repair the damages, and they were forced to pay me...then I did the work myself. Worked out well...

My wife asks me not to use our home address on anything anymore.

Yeah, I couldn't believe anyone would give a shit about anything I say...but small people get really upset by small things. When I lived in Calgary I would regularily meet people who wanted to kick my ass over some comment I made about their shitty band. Shit...a couple people in Victoria have acted the same way. Seriously, you can't talk to a guy who doesn't like your band??? C'mon... - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 12:45pm

Maybe you DO do it for the attention after all.
I mean, most of us grow out of this know-it-all phase much earlier in life, yet you're well into your thirties and still spouting angry negative shit and provoking people with thin skins.
Most of us give you absolutely no credit, but wouldn't it be nice for people to think your opinions mattered?
I know, it's just shitty LiveVic, and this conversation's happened before . . . and I can pretty much predict your response . . . . but when you have people throwing shit at your house and wanting to beat you up - don't you on some level think you're doing something wrong?

Here I am criticizing the critic . . . the truth is I find your tirades kinda cute and amusing . . . so on one level it would be a shame if you ever grew up. - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 1:41pm

What would growing up mean? We've alreday established that being negative on mesageboards is immature and accomplishes little...so maybe I should give that up. Anything else? Should I stop playing shitty music and resign myself to the fact that I can't play or write decent songs, and therefore should not be making music? Should I stop booking bands, putting out other people records and publishing crappy little music magazines and giving 'em to kids? I don't care if people think my opinions matter...I just care that they actually look at what's available, and make up their own opinions. You think that if people wanna beat me up and are throwing shit at my house, that I'm doing something wrong...I don't think it's me with the problem, I just made a couple statements of opininion.

Seriously though...I say a couple things on a messageboard like this, and everyone in Victoria is telling me to cool it. I can't belive how many people just go with the flow around here and buy into this town's shit... - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 2:21pm

Sounds like I struck a nerve! Too easy . . . you really need to have a thicker skin. ;)

Growing up, in part, means seeing the world as shades of grey, not black and white or AWESOME or SHITTY.
EVERYONE in Victoria is telling you to cool it?! NO man, it's just me.
Actually, I don't even care that much. But if you're going to dump on others you KNOW people will DUMP on you. It's like basic math.
I agree people need to be less 'go with the flow' around here. But I also think people like you could go at least a bit with the flow.

Dude - if I wanted to talk about music you'd be the LAST person would speak with. Intelligent conversation requires a broad mind.

You think you know me from a handful of posts on this board? Who said anything about INTELLIGENT conversation? I don't come on here to have intelligent conversation...I come on here to see the same old people doing the same old shit, and everyone patting 'em on the back for it.

You guys take music too seriously. You don't think my mind is broad enough....look at the rest of the Victoria music scene. Shitloads upon shitloads of "serious" musicians trying to make it in the biz and get their "art" out there...sounding like every other boring act doing the same in every other city.

What are you doing Superslacks? What are you contributing except posting on this message board? Enlighten me. - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 4:47pm

Ha, I thought this thread might turn into something like this. All the good ones do around here ;)

Seriously though, I don't really hold anything against T.D., he's entitled to his opinions just like anyone else, and he has actually critiqued me in a quasi-indirect way. I've noticed the shows that you put on around town, and it's quite obvious that we like different types of music, which is probably why you found my music so incredibly boring. That's ok.

Honest to Jeebus, I did put my stuff up here for exposure, and to receive critiques. I do care (to a point) what people think about my music, and try to take away what I can from people's comments. As I said before, it's just to give me an idea of what I can focus on and possibly work to improve. If you have a problem with me reacting to feedback, I can't really comprehend why.

That story about the guys throwing the CD's through your window is hilarious. Was that here in Vic? If so, I would love to know what band did that... Also, I have 2 boxes of my old band's albums in my basement, what's your address? - Wed, 21 Oct 2009 5:29pm

Greetings, Victoria! Just visiting your lovely city on holidays and I thought I'd check out Live Vic for some shows while I'm here. Then I stumbled upon this awesome thread!

WOW, how unfortunate you poor Victorians are to have Calgary's favorite band-hating skate-jock Tiemen "T. Depression" Kuipers living in your city!

HERE'S A TIEMEN QUOTE FROM ANOTHER THREAD...
..."This band SUCKS! They're from the town that I used to live in, so I went and saw 'em live even after listening to their recordings and thinking they were shitsville...just bad. Pop songs that have no hooks and never repeat the same part twice?!??!! UUUggggggg!!!!!!" [Reply by T. Depression on August 10, 2009 at 8:27pm] ...

Oooh, you're so punk, Tiemen!

Well, Victoria, until he gets run out of your town too, the best thing you can do is to just see him as the clown that he is - he's quite entertaining actually! Enjoy!! - Mon, 28 Jun 2010 5:55pm

A little too much testosterone on this messageboard perhaps guys??
Seriously tho, if T-Depresion (are you aka 'Talks cheap', btw??) is a newcomer to this town he should keep in mind that Victoria was producing amazing bands long before he came here and I can see why he pisses people off - like he's here to teach us what's cool.
Nomeansno, Dishrags, Bum, Infamous Scientists, Pigment Vehicle, Run Chico Run, Electric Bananas, Dayglos, Stupes, Hank and Lily, Vinagerettes, 64 Funnycars, Spikey Norman, the list goes on and on..... We were doing fine before you moved here!
