In The Country
JUNE 24 Vancouver East Cultural Centre
Pianist Morten Qvenild, best known for his membership in Susanna and the Magical Orchestra and Jaga Jazzist, leads the popular Norwegian piano trio In The Country. Since forming with Roger Arntzen bass and Pal Hausken drums in 2003, In The Country have been selected Best Young Jazz Artists in Norway, played concerts in Europe and the U.S., and released their debut album This Was The Pace Of My Heartbeat (Rune Grammofon) to much critical acclaim. Down Beat calls it “one of the finest and most arresting albums to come out of Europe,” while Mojo simply calls it “startling.” The new CD Losing Stones, Collecting Bones blends pop, rock, folk, blues, and classical traditions together in rich and detailed melodic layers. All About Jazz describes the music as a “harmonically rich language [that] extends beyond the conventional jazz vernacular to embrace a folksy elegance.” A double bill with Pierre Dørge New Jungle Orchestra.
