Event Description

Canada’s multi-award winning folk music quartet The Fretless will once again be back in Victoria for an epic night of music. Hot off their wins at the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards and the Western Canadian Music Awards, The Fretless are touring the North West with a stop in Victoria.

In November, The Fretless joined the likes of Leonard Cohen, Sarah McLachlan, Gordon Lightfoot, Jayme Stone, David Francey and Joel Plaskett by having a piece of music performed on the Carillon at the House of Commons as a part of the 10th Annual Canadian Folk Music Award (CFMA) celebrations.

With four nominations at the 2014 CFMA’s for their self-titled second release, The Fretless won, Ensemble of the Year for the album. The Fretless and Jayme Stone were the lone nominees at the 2014 CFMA awards to have their music played on the Carillon. The Fretless was nominated for Instrumental Group of the Year, Ensemble of the Year, Producer of the Year and Pushing the Boundaries.

“Unique, nouveau chamber music stylings…Get your hands on this one.”
– Penguin Eggs

The Fretless recently won Instrumental Album of the Year at the 2014 Western Canadian Music Awards for their second album – an award they also won in 2012 for their debut release Waterbound. Having been together for only three years, The Fretless have already toured extensively across Canada, the United States, and Europe. The Fretless released their “bold leap forward” sophomore album in March 2014 with critical acclaim and have been touring to promote this new album since – recently having just completed a five week tour of Europe followed by performances at the Celtic Colours International Festival in Cape Breton, NS.

Growing upon the success this unconventional quartet had with their debut album, The Fretless’ self titled second album features a complex and refreshing take on traditional music. This new release includes a cover of Radiohead’s Airbag, sung by Juno Award Winning Singer/Songwriter Ruth Moody and a haunting rendition of the traditional song Lonesome Scene of Winter, sung by Moody and Oliver Swain.

The Fretless – Karrnnel Sawitsky, Trent Freeman, Ivonne Hernandez and Eric Wright – won two 2012 CFMA’s for Instrumental Group of the Year and Ensemble of the Year.

The Fretless is an innovation in music that must be heard. They harbor all the energy of fiddle tunes, while shattering all expectations in writing, creativity and performance.

Coastline: Is a string ensemble comprised of 15 of BC's top young musicians coached by internationally acclaimed fiddler, Ivonne Hernandez. With 12 fiddles, 2 cellos and a guitar, the group of talented teens play a diverse and exciting repertoire of fiddle tunes from across Canada and around the world.

This award-winning band has already been making a name for themselves since their inception in January 2013. Individually, the members of Coastline have won many awards and competitions, and as a group their talents blend to form a strong, united sound that is a force to be reckoned with. They have won the Large Fiddle Ensemble Award at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival in 2013 and just recently in 2014. They perform at many different festivals, venues and private functions including but not limited to the Victoria International Highland Games & Celtic Festival, the Annual Father's Day Ceilidh in the Park and at the Victoria Fiddle Society's Annual FiddleFest. They have had the extreme pleasure and honour of opening for such award winning bands as The Fretless, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Qristina & Quinn Bachand and De Temps Antan.
