Someone I met on cherryTap, she has her own website, and I always believe in supporting INDependant artists, though the style of music she sings (pop) might not be for everyone's tastes, still the website is worth checking out, and DAMN she's cute!!! She also recently won 2 L.A. Music Awards, good for her. - Mon, 18 Dec 2006 1:00pm Edited: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 1:05pm

Yeah, yeah, I know. But I use cherryTap just to speak with people, although there's probably a number of desperate people (guys and girls) logging on there. Porn stars?!? http://www.xpeeps.com - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 1:33pm

Sorry mate, but these 'social networking' sites have done nothing more than reduce human contact to that of a digital medium. What ever happened to going out and actually talking to real flesh and blood people? Glad I never fell for any of these sites. I've met more cool people gaming online, and have kept up with a lot of them that grew out of it, myself included.

I'll probably shoot you an email Phil. You'd probably love hanging out here. More computers in this house than people, all networked together so LAN gaming is major easy. - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 1:51pm

Don't mean to pick on you today or anything, but like... isn't there a contradiction there? - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 3:55pm

How is it a contradiction? Because I enjoy human company when I decide to game? Do you even know what a LAN is? - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 4:31pm

Aaaahhhh... LAN person. Wow, you got a LAN setup in your house?!? Yeah, usually if you want to game you'd head down to the CyberCafe on Yates (morons work there, it seems :). I don't go out to meet possible relationships, I go out to meet people. Yeah well, when your as single as me, you try every way to meet people. Although I don't login to MySpace, cherryTap or xPeeps to find possible dates. And speaking of, you should see the collection of friends I've met on cherryTap for instance :) And yes, I think it's pretty cool actually. - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 5:22pm

Aye Phil. The office has 2 comps side by side on a nice big spacious desk. Those are the 2 gaming rigs in the house. There's a 3rd for our wireless monitoring system and then kiddos downstairs. The 2 gaming rigs are hardwired, rather than wireless like the other 2 are. A while back I hosted more than a few friends over, think we ended up with 6 or so that BYOS'd. Even with all 6 online, we never came close to capping the speeds our extreme package allows (10mb/1mb). - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 6:35pm

Who doesn't know what LAN gaming is these days? The images of pasty boys and girls huddled around their neon, liquid cooled boxes, clawed hands feverish on the 'joystick', faces lit up blue have become common.

LAN Gaming is to Floor Hockey
... what ...
Social Networking is to Partying.

Yes? No?

So to attempt a geek one up, you ever play turn-based games over a BBS (dial-up, not these internet based ones)? If so, what's the lowest baud rate you'd have done so at? - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 8:31pm

I used to run a BBS or 2 back when they were the rage. And good luck one uping someone who used to sell tandy computers back in the late 70's. We had to call in our daily orders to head office over a 300baud modem.

And no, LAN Gaming is to floor hockey what social networking is to partying. Not even remotely similies. Nic try though. - Tue, 19 Dec 2006 8:50pm

Heh... I remember when a 2400 bps external was a BIG DEAL!!! Even running 1200 bps off my Radio Shack Color Computer 2 was 'lite (I could run it at 2400 bps, but that gawd awful terminal software you had to run to connect to systems at 2400 bps I couldn't). aCk... memoriez! Tandy's rocked!!! - Wed, 20 Dec 2006 2:16am

Yeah, so we'll call it a tie. If I still actually had my manual 300 baud modem kicking around, I might not be so generous.

I don't quite get the last sentence there, but assume you're disagreeing.

I'd like to know what the difference is as on one hand, gaming and social networking both require the digital medium for people participating to communicate (thus distancing them from each other) while floor hockey and partying involve direct physical interaction.

So yeah, I see the comparison as perfectly valid. - Wed, 20 Dec 2006 2:37pm

And just proves you haven't a clue how LAN gaming works if you think the only communication is VIA digital delivery. My post to Phil regarding our gaming room/office setup states what I'm saying in regards to LAN gaming. But even large scale LAN's aren't completely digital communication either. There's just as much talking face to face at LAN's as there are for any other type of entertainment. In fact a lot of LAN parties are great ways to meet people face to face that you might only ever game online with. So no, your comparison does nothing more than show your ignorance. - Wed, 20 Dec 2006 3:27pm

Some of the biggest LAN parties I've seen just blow me away (over a million+ people) but I suck at PC gaming, especially LAN stuff (though I solved Holf Life 2 when I got out of hospital, the lagging sucks but that was a lot of fun. - Wed, 20 Dec 2006 7:53pm

RTS' are really fun on LAN Phil. Starcraft, LOTR, Warhammer 40k. Gaming isn't about sucking and 'pwning' it's about having fun ;) Anyway, shot ya an email. Hopefully it didn't get eaten up by a spam filter. - Wed, 20 Dec 2006 8:32pm

as i understand it, LAN is an acronym for "laughing at nuns". now, i'm not religious or anything, but i don't think it is very cool at all to get together as a group just to laugh at a bunch of vestal virgins - especially during the christmas holidays. i mean, jesus christ, if thats your idea of social interaction - digitalized or not - you can count me out. - Thu, 21 Dec 2006 10:14am
