Madrid Power Rockers Mago De Oz have put out their new album, Belfast, and I must say I'm quite surprised. Offal Consumer turned me on to these guys with a few burned track smashed between Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray (or something like that), so I got the overall impression that Mago played Power Metal exclusively. Nothing could be further from the truth on "Belfast" as there is a wealth of variety here. Opening with a traditional Celtic guitar/fiddle/tin whistle piece, I was thrown off right away ("Fuck, this don't sound too particulairly spanish to me. The spic's done been drinkin' guiness!"). The next, self-titled track was a solid chugging metal tune, but didn't grab me outside of the rough-but-impressive latin vocals flowing through the chorus. "La Rosa De Los Vientos" is where this slab really kicks off. A slower, more polished re-working from an earlier album that sports a speedy double-kick and jumpy beat, tight duelling guitars, and a melody that (while not particulairly original) makes me smile and think of how cool seeing Helloween in Germany '87 would have been. The album continues on with a heavy Irish influence (a violinist/fiddler and tin whistler are lead musicians here). A hilarious version of "(I can't help) Falling in love with you" is played, albeit with very different lyrics and some of the patterns have been changed, but the chorus is still there to sing along with, even if you know spanish (and why don't you?). My faves are the aforementioned "La Rosa...", "Hasta Que Tu Muerte Nos Separe", "Mujer Amante" and the acoustic, Tiny-Tim-meets-Jimmy-Buffet ENGLISH version of "Over The Rainbow".

Not for everyone, and people who know me will probably be scratching their heads that I have this, but try it for something different. That is, unless you've been listening to your Discharge records exclusively since grd. 9 and hate anything even remotely "song-based".
