can't sleep - middle of the night..
This show was a few weeks ago, but it was worth mentioning.
I got there after Pride Tiger had just started and Richards already looked packed, so that tells you how well this local band's doing. They were just coming off the western canadian leg of the NP tour and I think they won some people over with that one - how could they not! Certainly the folk in NP anyway. They had the best sound of the night, and man do I ever like that thin lizziness...
Those who haven't seen this band yet are missing out!

Priestess played next and again, I kinda missed what all the fuss was about. Not because they played poorly or because of any shortcomings of theirs, but BECAUSE THE SOUND SUDDENLY STARTED SUCKING BAD. The guy busted out into this long drum solo and someone had the bright idea of amplifying everything to the point of cruelty - it became all rumbling with no seperation and I was literally driven from the floor. I went to the back where people said it sounded better, but even that sounded like crap. I eventually went to the lobby area to escape, and that was a shame, cuz people I knew were really excited about that band and were kinda bummed that the crowd wasn't responding, as were the musicians. It was cuz WE COULDN'T HEAR!

Same with NP. Whatever anyone says, they are NOT over-rated - take your eyes of her breasts for a minute and listen to her play! Ruyder's a soulful/powerful guitarist and I'm hoping that with age she'll get more of the respect she deserves. Blaine's obviously her biggest fan, and loves it when she gets all the credit, but HE's an equally impressive guitarist as well, not to mention the driving force of that band - I LOVE that growl. He's a really interesting/reassuring guy to talk with, intelligent, sensitive & down to earth and loads of experience to draw from - total balance. Whether you're into the style of music or not, they do it well, and Ruyder's still got all the moves, still hams it up, still knows how to make the entire floor groan and beg, ha! And no one ever says it, but I think Jeremy's one of my favorite drummers.. something about his hit and fluidity/groove - so southern! And yes they pulled off the old adrenaline punk stuff as well as they ever have.

But the sound was SOOOO HARSH! I believe lots of vocals were missing and we couldn't even hear lead GUITARS through much of it, and again, it left the performers confused at the lack of crowd response. They were blasting us with volume and I couldn't stand it and had to back away again, hating myself while I did it cuz I wanted to be up watching the players. The soundguy (I'm pretty sure he was the soundguy that night), looked miserable afterwards. Dunno what happened there. crying shame in a pro room like that. Still a wicked show and I can't imagine anyone having left disappointed. A great lineup, and like I said, that band still holds up and doesn't show any signs of fading.
