| Dr. Fuse User Info... | I pack up my axe immediately following trombonist Ian McDougal's amazing show at the Royal, and curse my sluggish glowplugs as they try to get my vegetable-oil-powered diesel started. Finally, in a burst of biodiesel smoke, my car starts and I race the four blocks from the Royal Theatre to the Victoria Conservatory's Metro Theatre, to catch the end (if that), of Polaris Prize (all $20,000 of it!) winner Owen Pallett (AKA Final Fantasy). As I park Horton, I see a few people leaving and curse again at my job's late hours, but nevertheless rush into the box office. "Is the show over?", I ask. "He's playing an encore". says the oh-so-cool indie-doorman. "Can you let me in?", I ask politely. "No", says asshole. So I creep to the stage door and join a few youngsters listening with ear-to-door (hint: the stage door at the parking lot of the Metro theatre has excellent acoustics - I cursed yet again that I didn't bring a recording device to make what would now be a multi-thousand dollar-but-priceless-to-me recording). I heard FF play an original encore, and a Mariah Carey cover (it has "fantasy" repeated in the lyric), and was mesmerized. But I cursed a final time that I could not witness what the fuck he was doing to get the songs across: was the piano, bass and drums a recorded track? Did he perform them live? Via MIDI? Next time he's in town, I'll gladly lose the $800 symphony salary and see him instead, expect it will no longer be a ridiculous ticket price of $12... - Tue, 26 Sep 2006 7:28pm Edited: Tue, 26 Sep 2006 7:40pm | ||
| Peter Gardner User Info... | It was an excellent show. and fyi: the first song of the encore was a Bloc Party song. - Tue, 26 Sep 2006 9:08pm | ||
| joni User Info... | he played the bloc party cover? gahh! jealousy! did he do the joanna newsom cover, as well? - Tue, 26 Sep 2006 10:08pm | ||
| Tyler User Info... | those were the only two covers he played. and for the covers, he only used his voice and violin. he looped them with a sampler, which is how he does all his live songs when performing alone (some songs he used a keyboard, but not those covers). you heard some vocal effects and violin-thumping, not piano bass or drums. this show was amazing. I loved the overhead projecter thing, the songs left me breathless (moreso than the recordings), he seemed kind of a jerk but good natured at the same time. I was glad to have gotten to chat with him a bit before the show. I made videos of nearly every song except the last 4 or so. - Wed, 27 Sep 2006 12:52am | ||
