| . User Info... | Today no one else matters except for the metalheads who were at that show last night. You all pale in comparison to those of us who got to be a part of it. Their set was STUPIDLY good. I'm looking forward to seeing them in bigger and bigger venues cuz its only a matter of time, and it better be a short time. They pull it off like they're leading large crowds of metalheads into victory no matter who's in front of them, in part because they've experienced it - they play pretty regularly to sold out mid-sized rooms up north, where they were from. But also cuz its obvious they're staying true to a vision. I'm gonna try to convey this: Gallant, old school METAL, great technical riffs, skilled players, and yes this matters: cool people who'll never be condescending or treat their fans like shit and won't feel so weak as to have to kiss ass to the bastards to get ahead. They just won't need to. Pure headbanging material start to finish. The singer's got the type of look and attack you want in a metal frontman - he's hella tall, big hair & presence, and when he's waving that fist up in the air, whether growling or shrieking, he's completely convincing of what they're there to do. He's Atlas & Hercules - he's MONSTROUS, and as he ages he'll grow into that vision & power and get even more thundering. He's one of those guys where whether he starts singing or even moving after a break, the energy picks up and half the room starts banging again. He epitomizes & interprets the intention of the band.. not like the other musicians are any slouches either... drums/bass/rhythms/leads are all players where you're torn between banging and watching/listening to clever riffs, getting taken to higher ground by great solos. The energy's so driving that occasional fuckups just don't matter. Every once in a while great bands teach me the meanings of certain things closely associated with their genres. Last night DRW taught me what ALL those extended arms & gestures are really about in a way I just didn't see it before. They also taught me about the power of what family and community can accomplish. They're not a product of Vancouver, in all our big-city haphazard scene splitting & competition.. they've got healthy, strong roots elsewhere that will never let them down and thats where their goods come from. Its pretty amazing. They used to be called Widowmaker and are back after a lengthy (tendonitis issues & recording) break with the new name DEAD RIVER WASTELAND. You've gotta see them. Definately in my top 3 favorite local metal bands. I kinda missed the Alberta openers, but heard good things. - Sat, 23 Sep 2006 4:16pm | ||
