Friday May 13th and Saturday May 14th at the Fairview at 898 W. Broadway. Advance tickets are only $12.00 (plus service charges/fees where applicable) and are available starting Thursday April 7th at 10AM. Featuring original members Greg Hathaway, Barry Taylor, Keith Rose, David Hathaway and Mark Campbell, Roots Roundup will also be joined by Andy Codrington on Trombone and some "to be announced" special guests and friends. Special guest, singer / songwriter Lazare S. Halk from Togo, West Africa opens the show on both nights starting at 9:30 PM. Originally formed in 1985 in a small apartment in deep east Vancouver, Roots Roundup was known as one of Canada's hardest working, hardest touring and hardest rockin' worldbeat dance bands. They had numerous independent releases including "Get Rooted", "What We Do", "Syzygy" and in 1997, four years after they played their farewell show to a sold out Commodore Ballroom, "Rootrospective", a 16 song collection spanning their entire recording career. Roots Roundup was probably best known for their hybrid of globe-spanning music, their high energy shows and the amazing variety of different venues they played. From speakeasies, coffee-houses, community halls and public rallies to nightclubs big and small, folk festivals and rock festivals... you name it, they probably played it... Regularly packing clubs and halls across the country and local venues such as the much missed Town Pump and the old Commodore Ballroom, Roots Roundup also opened up for a diverse number of artists ranging from The Original Wailers Band and UB-40 to The Butthole Surfers and DOA. During the last 10 years, Roots Roundup in it's original form has only played one reunion show (two nights at the also much-missed Starfish Room), so don't miss this rare opportunity... come dance and celebrate the 20th Anniversary reunion show Roots Roundup! Leave Us Free by Steven Halk - Steven Halk aka Lazare is newly arrived to Canada from Togo, but he's quickly found a community of friends among Vancouver's like-minded global artists and his first North American recording deserves to be heard. Steven lost his sight at age 9, fell in love with music and began recording when he was 19. The press called him "The Stevie Wonder of Togo". Steven's genuine, passion-fueled delivery on 'Leave Us Free' however, evokes comparison to another great performer. Ziggy Marley reinvented himself last year as a solo singer/songwriter. For my money his latest release, Dragonfly was one of the year's best. Like Ziggy, Steven has a global voice that rings true in a stripped down arrangement. A gift for great melodies and some help from Vancouver's multi-talented Allan Rodger doesn't hurt this album either. - Cal Koat Album Review of Lazare S.
