| Message Board > Show Reviews > The Dead Will Rise, Mitochondrion, Ungoliant at the fifty fifty, feb 25 |
| Tyler User Info... | Well, what'd you guys think? I thought there was a really good turnout, especially compared to the other show at fernwood. Mitochondrion - I was impressed compared to what I expected. They're a deathgrind band from Langford (near where I live, haha). I thought their songs were really written detailed and well. Yes, I enjoyed them. The Dead Will Rise - My favourite band of the night, of course. I bought their cd, which I was going to do anyway because the song on the site ruled. I thought the lead vocalist (a female screamer! yay) put on a really good show and I was fond of the band's style. While I listen to the cd now, I realize that there are a lot of parts of the music that I didn't pick up on while listening to them live. If they ever came back to Vic, I'd see them again. Ungoliant - I only saw a few songs and didn't really like them. Still, it sounded ok. I left partway through the set. There were a lot of people packed into the fifty fifty... it made it a little uncomfortable and impossible to see the bands well. Still, there was a lot of energy in the pit and such. I have some pictures of each band. I will post them soon. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 2:09am | ||

| Nik Olaz User Info... | fyi, i am the only mito member from langford. we played allright. there were a few screwups. but whatevsky. the Dead Will Rise are freakin neat. i was totally impressed with the song writing skills, riffs and vocal approach. totally well done. when and if they come back i'll be there irregardless. Ungoliant, I saw you the other night at yer own house. You guys are beyond your audience. Theyre mostly just only there to "mosh" or something. Whatevs you rawk. Mad props to everyone. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 4:04am | ||
| Brian VIHC User Info... | Damn, I missed zombiecore. I fell asleep working on my shooting schedule. Did anyone videotape it? - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 9:45am | ||
| spinvis User Info... | It was a great show. Didn't see all of Mito since it was sold out but managed to get in later. Dead Shall Rise were really great, a memorable band. Their banner was so plain though, no logo just some basic font. Not that it matters :) Ungoliant was impressive. Great drumming, nice riffs. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 9:49am | ||
| SickFuk User Info... | I don't usually go to the all ages gigs, but I figured I had to check this one out.... I've been meaning to check out Mitocondrion for eons now... But as for Mito, I was in no way dissappointed [except they didn't do Stripped, Raped and Strangled]..:)... but truely, they kicked ass The Dead Will Rise.... honestly, they impressed me the most... for such a tiny little chick, she sure put out some ripping vocals... and musically they had a wicked rhythm Ungoliant I thought was pretty damn good too... kind of a trippy/ heavier version of Tool musically... with some brutal vox on top.. All in all this was a pretty wicked show, wouldn't mind hooking up a show at the 50/50 myself sometime 'ere - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 11:25am | ||
| Cheeky User Info... | Holy fuck was that show insane, even with the mix up on times. Tons of people there inside, tons outside. Mito opened up the night and shredded the place. I had a broken wrist to begin with but that mosh pit made sure it stayed broken (and I didn't even go into the mosh pit). It was insane. As everyone says, each time we see them they just keep getting better and better. The dead will rise. HOLY FUCK. I was totally blown away with these guys and really regret not being able to get a cd. They were tight, great sound and awesome vocals by the female singer. I would definately see them again, here or travel to another place. Last band. Didn't like them. Wont say anything more. All in all: Fuckin' wicked show. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 12:07pm | ||
| Mutilashawn User Info... | mito-we are cool dead will rise-slayed ungoliant-best band of the night, not surprised that people didn't "get" them - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 12:21pm | ||
| moron User Info... | Mito's guitars were a tad quiet (please go to Long and Mcquade ASAP) but a solid set none the less, the right balance of intricate and brutal. Dead Will Rise was totally not my thang, very generic sounding to my ears. Like a mish mash of weak Iron Maiden riffs recycled through late 80s crossover with the odd bit of death metal vocal work to try to pass it off as being intense (which it wasn't). Trying to beat the zombie level of Wario 3 on my gameboy colour was a lot more intense. For the record though I think that that Black Dahlia Murder sucks too and don't get into 99% of power metal. I saw Ungoliant a few days back and the bigger PA this time definitely helped. Not sure what was different but they impressed me the most out of what went on that night. Like a blackened Neurosis with the discordant edge of early Unsane tempered by a trip to Norway. Melodic without sounding test audience, anthemic at times and definitely driving. Good stuff. | XY-SATAN User Info... | Took the whole am dam family to this one ! Haha! Mitochondrion was good but I agree the guitar was way too low and hard to hear or make out. The Dead Will Rise rawked enjoyed them immensely ! We missed the last band , had to get the little one home . Oh and before the gig we went to the jam spots and watched Abuse of Power , thanks you guys for letting the kids, Brenda and I listen before we went to the show . We all loved it ! You guys are top fucking notch in my books . - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 2:34pm | ||
| canon.docre User Info... | Thank you to everyone who came out to the show. Sorry to anyone I was policing outside about drinking. I felt like a hypocrite, but I was just trying to save kids from getting their beer dumped/fined/drunk tanked, not to mention keep the venue out of trouble. It wasn't totally in vain, I told everyone to go drink at least a few more blocks from the venue right before the pigs showed up. Unfortunately the cops ended up being called on us anyways. Hopefully the fifty-fifty will remain an option for underground touring bands. I don't point fingers when it comes to alcohol abuse, but cheers to people (ahem, person) trying to drive drunk and sexually harassing the female patrons. The people who work at the fifty-fifty actually asked me "is he really part of your scene?" Stay home next time unless you take a cab home and can respect the women who come out to our shows. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 4:22pm | ||
| Mutilashawn User Info... | quiet guitars were due to NO micing. it was just straight from the amp . . . and when you have 4 poor bastards in a death metal band new amps aren't exactly accessable. most our money goes toward the jam space. haha. really sad. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 5:00pm | ||
| CaveSlave User Info... | this was a pretty insane all ager.. the crowd had a ton of energy all night. Mitochondrion always rule.. their set last night was really good.. and the kids went off.. good job guys! shawn.. i love your clean vocals. The Dead Shall Rise were pretty rad.. very tight and technical stuff.. i'm not a huge metalcore fan.. but they mixed it up with some different genres and all and all.. it came off really well. Ungoliant squeezed in our set at the end of the night.. thanks to all those who stuck around.. we played fairly sloppy.. but glad to know that a few enjoyed it. i wasn't aware that we sounded anything like tool.. i can saftely say this was one of the funnest all agers i've been to in victoria.. thanks most of all to the fifty fifty and the kids (and elders) who showed up to support the bands. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 5:29pm | ||
| Bryn User Info... | ![]() The stuff that actually happened in real life was fun, too. A really high energy show from all the bands. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 5:33pm | ||
| What I've Become User Info... | awesome! i couldn't come, but I'm glad to hear that it was sold-out and an overall positive experience. Here's to keeping the scene alive and well! - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 7:42pm | ||
| The Other Nick User Info... | Yeah, i guessed you couldnt hear the guitar during our set (mito). By the end of the night i had the thing cranked, thought it would be loud enough...Oh well. Come check us out when we are at a larger venue with the guitar, bass, and drums mic'd. Either that or in 2 years when i have enough money to buy a full stack and a brutal amp. We played a decent set; a bit sloppy. The Dead Will Rise: they get my respect for changing their strings fast and plowing on. Didn't seem to throw 'em of much at all. Once again, doubtfully a band i would listen to at home, but would see again in a second. Intense, interesting, brutal at times, catchy at times, memorable drum patterns. More vocals always = better. The Ungoliant: INFERNAL HAILS TO OUR DARK LORD SAURON!!!!Out the blacked-doom of mordor, i liked the ultra fast blast black metal parts and the clean parts the best. I hope they go in a more black metal direction (im gay for black metal though so dont listen to me). Scott add in your iskra vocals overtop the duel vocals assult please thanks. \m/ (ps. DO THE MEAT HOOK) - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 8:31pm | ||
