Doesn't this beat summer school?

Back for another round of kick-ass is Rockergirlcamp.

Taking place in Victoria July 9-13, the five-day workshop for girls aged 10-17 is designed to empower, inform, support, encourage, engage and inspire young women interested in making music, learning about the music industry and creating their own voice.

Since female rocker Rachelle Van Zanten of the Painting Daisies launched the camp in 2005, it has expanded to include three Canadian cities and a host of instructors and guests in its third year of operation.

Workshops and classes include small group classes in beginner and advanced voice, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, songwriting, jamming, rap and free-styling, sound and gear, booking gigs, press kits and promotions. Instructors include Lyndell Montgomery of Ember Swift, Anne Schaefer and Kia Kidiri alongside Van Zanten.

All three weeks culminate in weekly final performances by the participants in bands performing one original piece of music created and work-shopped during the week. Registration is now open.

For more information about Rockergirlcamp call 294-2009, send an e-mail to [email protected] or go to http://www.rockergirlcamp.com.
