I listened to the news the other day which I don't do often and first thing I heard was that some fucking piece of scum (or pieces) broke into the Vancouver Zoo and murdered a spider monkey and abducted his mate. The next item reported on how much difficulty rescue crews were having getting into Burma to assist the thousands of suffering men, women and children post cyclone because of visa requirement. Is the world that completely fucked up? I don't plan on listening to the news again any time soon. - Sat, 10 May 2008 7:21am

I gave up on the news about two years ago. Now I just watch cartoons in the morning before work, and all my co-workers say I am much happier and easier to get along with.

One of my co workers would watch CNN all day, and by five o'clock he would be a seething, raging wreck until we put parental controls on his TV. Now all he gets is YTV and Family Channel. His wife has thanked us.

You've got to remember that the news, like all television programming is ratings driven. They will of course focus on the horrific, just to gain viewers. - Sat, 10 May 2008 8:11am

A little perspective can do a lot of good. Raging certainly doesn't accomplish much.

That said, I think it's not a bad idea to do something with the rage sometimes.

In this 'civilized' world, it's disgusting that we allow a tiny group of criminals - the 'government' of Burma/ Myanmar - to neglect the weakest members of its population, struck by this disaster.

I've written to my member of parliament to say that I do believe we should ignore the sovereignty of these criminals and air drop supplies. If they shoot on our planes, we declare war and remove those scumbags. Those surviving we bring before the world court for crimes against humanity.

There will be casualties of that action - both ours and local civilians - but much less than the casualties of the crisis. That's looking to be between 60,000 and 500,000 in the next week depending on what happens.

These are modern genocides.

Though I enjoy diverting myself with entertainment and feel that's the right of any civilized person, I can't ignore the reality of the world that like it or not, we participate in one way or another.

The monkey thing is just fucked. - Sun, 11 May 2008 11:14pm

I remember about 10 yrs ago someone went in and machetied a whole bunch of pink flamingos at that zoo. I don't think I was the only one walking around pretty sickened for weeks after that. - Mon, 12 May 2008 2:10am
