Racism over 9-11 remains

By MAX MAUDIE, EDMONTON SUN - Sun, September 10, 2006

http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/Edmonton/2006/09/10/1821792-sun.html

The anti-Muslim backlash of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks was felt here in Edmonton.

And five years later, the memories are still painful.

"Right after 9-11, women (who appeared Arab) had their scarves yanked off their heads," said Nora Abou-Absi, executive director of the local Canadian Arab Friendship Association.

Some were Muslim, some were Sikh, said Abou-Absi, but they all fit the images of terror to North Americans - they had similar features to the Arab Middle Eastern men fingered for the terror attacks.

HOUSE WAS EGGED

Abou-Absi's house was egged. The association received threatening phone calls and hate mail.

Five years later, with 9-11-related wars still raging in Iraq and Afghanistan, the racism and hatred isn't as sharp, said Abou-Absi.

"It's not so overt now," she said, adding the hate mail and nasty calls continue.

"As one of my friends eloquently put it, you (people apparently of Middle Eastern descent) are the flavour of the century."

Shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, a mosque was torched in Montreal, and a Muslim teen in Ottawa was swarmed and beaten.

Edmonton police said they didn't note a large increase in local hate crimes at the time, but said they had stepped up patrols near mosques.

Children at the Edmonton Islamic School - now the Edmonton Islamic Academy - were kept indoors Sept. 12 during breaks out of fears that even children could be targeted.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY

The academy's director recently told the Sun it was simply a case of better safe than sorry.

"That was just because the event was hot at the time and we weren't sure (what would happen)," said Ali Assaf.

Nothing untoward happened, nor has the school felt the brunt of any racist retaliation since, he said.

"We live in a great city here," said Assaf.

Abou-Absi said many Arabs who've come to Canada left countries behind where they didn't have the freedom Canadians enjoy.

"They came here because they wanted something their country didn't give them, and they respect that.

"We have been and always will be committed to Canada as a country."

Wayta'keep on instigating,- you are pathetic.

I walked by this Berka wearing lady today, I guess it could be any other day, that I don't see many women in berkas' but you could see her smile... (The smile looked genuine) The other day, at work we drove past some fully clad berka's (no faces showing)they were waiting out front of the school to pick up their children.

And I fully laughed at them. They looked so fucken stupid! LOLOLLOL!!!1!!!!1

So, I remember when 9-11-2001 first happened and about 2 days later after the attacks, am sitting on the Skytrain, wishing the train would be dropping me off. And as I'm tired and sitting there, trying to avoid, listening to these obnoxious yappy M.E. women laughing and talking away...

This Native Woman approaches them to ask them to 'speak, English or French, or just STFU!'

The Muslim ladies shrugged her off, and kept on laughing away, seemingly with no care in the world- except their conversation.

The Native lady comes back and tells them to shut up.

A security guard intervenes, and pompously says to the Native Woman,"This IS Canada, you stupid bitch!"

So, I tells the security guard to stay out it. Security Guards takes a swing at me.

Then I beat the living piss out of Tough Guy Security Guard... Just as the door is ringing the guy is by now unconscious.... *BC TRANSIT RINGS THE STREET NAME NA-NAI-MO*

I one-handedly, throws the guy out of the car. While he is still mid-air and hasn't hit the ground, falling as he is- I kick him right in the fucking face!
