I'm trying to teach myself acoustic guitar. Like with real chords and shit. I know how to play a lot of songs with power chords, so I'd like to know if there is an easy way to change power chords into real chords which will sound good.

I already tried playing the chords that have the same name as the lowest note of the power chord. That didn't work out so well for me. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 11:16pm

Turn your power chords into barre chords. For example, a G5 power chord (root on E string) turns from this:

E -3-
A -5-
D -5-

into this:
E -3-
A -5-
D -5-
G -4-
B -3-
e -3-

and a C5 power chord (root on A string) goes from:

A -3-
D -5-
G -5-

into:
A -3-
D -5-
G -5-
B -5-
e -3-

These are moveable chord forms just like power chords. Hope this helps. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 11:52pm

You don't have to play power chords to deliver the message in your music (I'm also learning, but I've been studying how music is written most of my life). I just pick single strings, but all you need to learn is: E Chord, A Chord and a G Chord, I think a lot of popular music is written using these chords, and I do believe Ian already covered this. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 12:29am

Just get a simple book that has a good chart of guitar chords:

learn all your open major/minor chords,
learn the different positions for major/minors (E form/A form etc)

Learn your 7ths (major and dominant)and all teh various positions for them

this alone will take you a while - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 10:42am

if your a gadget kind of person you can also purchase a "chord book" from long and mcquade. it has multiple voicings of chords (so you can play your chords in different positions/strings) and can be useful for writing or practicing.

Well easiest way... learn numeric tab, play with switching chords, and fuck around with your own riffs. I wrote a song in 20 minutes following this formula (you might hear it soon, not sure, need a backing band). - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 1:47am

G, C, and D... I find a lot of stuff uses those chords... Violent Femmes songs usually seem to use them, quite a few velvet underground songs, and some damn good van morrison song... - Mon, 29 Dec 2003 8:31am

Learn the A, E, D, C, and G chord positions. Almost every barre chord is based on the A and E positions, just moved up the neck. Happy trails. - Mon, 29 Dec 2003 9:25am
