I am visiting toronto and just caught their FREE cd release show. They played a rockin' set to an excited bunch of kids. I am not usually a fan of encores, but this time was an exception. They were cheered back on stage twice and played any and every song the crowd demanded. Regardless of if you have someone to go with or not, you really shoudn't miss this show. - Tue, 2 Sep 2003 2:32pm

I went to the show having not heard the Weakerthans or anyone else on the line-up (was given a free ticket), and I was really impressed. It was nothing that I expected, having been told they played "punk" (that was the in-depth description I was given). During the show I only heard a couple songs of theirs that even resembled punk. The guitars were really tight with one another, and the chord structures were interesting, and complimented one another well. I couldn't make out most of the vocals, but whenever i did hear them I was amazed by how poetic and sharp the lyrics were. I didn't enjoy his voice all that much, but he was always on pitch. Anyways, I'm really curious to hear the new album now.
The first band, Femme Bots, completely blew me away. They are one of the most unique bands I've heard live, and their melodies and harmonies were beautiful, especially with all the violin/acoustic guitar/organ interplay going on underneath. And I loved the creative percussive elements. Very inventive. It sort of reminded me of the Tom Waits junkyard (in a good way) rhythm. Long story short they gave me a hard-on and were the highlight of the show for me. - Wed, 10 Sep 2003 5:20pm
