| Doppelganger User Info... | Summer's a coming and along with reggae their aint no better way to soundtrack the long hot summer days and nights. - Sat, 13 May 2006 9:33pm | ||
| KnifeGhost User Info... | Fuck reggae, dude. That shit has nothing on Motown. Motown is the most perfect music ever made. - Sun, 14 May 2006 2:38am | ||
| Nik Olaz User Info... | Word. - Sun, 14 May 2006 3:55am | ||
| Mi*coll* User Info... | I have this record called "a cellar full of motown", which is all unreleased stuff. it is pretty great. basically motown circa 1960-1968 is the best stuff ever. but once "wah wah watson" or whatever got in there it went down hill. benny benjamin and james jamerson are the best ever. they're also part of my same-first-and-last-name supergroup with robbie robertson and kris kristopherson but not marky mark. - Sun, 14 May 2006 10:57am | ||
| Mutilashawn User Info... | ah benny benjamin and james jamerson .. brilliant musicians. yes I fucking love Motown and just all 60's and 70's soul/funk in general!!! Some of my all time favs - MARVIN GAYE, AL GREEN, CURTIS MAYFIELD, SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE, and I'm going to say PARLIAMENT eventhough they are not even close to Motown but still AMAZING. - Sun, 14 May 2006 11:15am | ||
| Swingin' Joe User Info... | No one fucks with Sly And The Family Stone! How bout Rick James? He was on Motown in the later years. - Sun, 14 May 2006 12:19pm | ||
| princess p User Info... | I love motown. We should start a band for the summer. I gots the pipes if any of you have the chops - Mon, 15 May 2006 4:20pm | ||
| kristian User Info... | i like sly and the family stone and ottis redding - Tue, 16 May 2006 9:01pm | ||
| lauren a User Info... | If you like motown you should check out Martha Reeves at Jazz Fest this year. - Wed, 17 May 2006 3:43am | ||
| Lordpatch User Info... | ![]() however, as for studio inovations, motown was top of the line. mixing board hoo doos like brain wilson to lee scratch perry (and the ska, rock steady, reggae and dub scientists) to brian eno (talking heads -- "remain in light") all have learned from the backing track formula that was speard headed by motown -- taking it's lead from sun studio's use (and reuse) of it's rhythm tracks. Dave Edmunds did a pretty bang up job when he simulated the sun studio effects for the first stray cats release (prior to the mixed down version of the north american release -- done without his or the bands approval). stax rules the leather souls. http://www.globalvillageidiot.net/soul1.htm http://staxrecords.free.fr/ - Wed, 17 May 2006 10:42am Edited: Wed, 17 May 2006 10:48am | ||
| JasonLove User Info... | if you're down with motown music then chack out a few jazz fest shows, specifically Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and Jacksoul. And OF COURSE Martha Reeves. I played with her last year when she came to town and she is really a wonderful lady and an amazing performer. she's playing with the vic high r&b band who sound fantastic this year. check them out. - Wed, 17 May 2006 2:34pm | ||
| Mike User Info... | I hate motown and everything it stands for. I hope that answers your question. - Wed, 17 May 2006 3:27pm | ||
| KnifeGhost User Info... | Why do you hate black people so much? Anyways, that aside, Motown (and related soul) is the SHIT. PrincessP, I'm in. I've never tried to play straight-up soul, but damn am I ever up for trying. - Thu, 18 May 2006 4:45pm | ||
| Mike User Info... | I don't hate black people. I hate Motown. I understand how one would confuse this matter. I guess I should say, I hate Motown and everything it stands for, except if it stands for Black pride. In that case, I would hate almost everything Motown stands for. Peace Out. - Thu, 18 May 2006 4:56pm | ||
| Mr. Hell User Info... | You know, not all black people make and perform Motown. It's a little stereotypical to pigeonhole people with an African ancestry as all loving Motown and not being able to get enough of that soul sound. Personally, I don't mind Motown, but R&B is terrible and so are the people who make it. - Thu, 18 May 2006 5:58pm | ||
| Mike User Info... | I actually like the Temptations. So, I kinda lied. Not all Motown sucks, but a lot of it does. It is that do wop shit that I hate. It's like, c'mon you're men, enough with humming and snapping fingers. - Thu, 18 May 2006 6:39pm | ||
| KnifeGhost User Info... | Mike, don't worry. I knew what you meant. But if you really hate Motown, well, let's just say that I can't imagine a life as cold and empty and sad as that. You'll get by, dude. But will it really be.... Living? Mr. Hell, it's not that all black people make Motown, it's that (almost all) the people who made Motown were black. If memory serves, Remy Shand was the first white (solo) artist signed to Motown. But Motown doesn't count past about 1974. - Thu, 18 May 2006 8:19pm | ||
| Swingin' Joe User Info... | I consider Lionel Richie white. - Thu, 18 May 2006 8:23pm | ||
| Lordpatch User Info... | ![]() she was cool. she still is cool - Thu, 18 May 2006 8:26pm Edited: Thu, 18 May 2006 8:27pm | ||
| KnifeGhost User Info... | She certainly precedes Remy Shand. My information is based on a half-remembered half-heard comment on Much 7 years ago. - Thu, 18 May 2006 9:02pm | ||
| Doppelganger User Info... | This is for Mike. Mike, how can you quantify and reconcile, "I Hate Motown" with "Peace out"? - Sun, 21 May 2006 1:09am Edited: Sun, 21 May 2006 1:10am | ||
| Mike User Info... | That is because of dualism. Have you seen Full Metal Jacket. That should explain it nicely. - Sun, 21 May 2006 3:50pm | ||
| duder User Info... | Obviously you have all seen Standing in the Shadow of Motown and both enjoy and admire the music and the musicians who made it. If you haven't seen it you should it is a wicked awesome movie. Motown's music is some of the best in the world and can be enjoyed every day rain or shine because they have a song for any mood, any time and any day. Make sure to play this music for the next generation and maybe they might learn to enjoy it as much as I do! - Sun, 21 May 2006 6:35pm | ||
| KnifeGhost User Info... | I haven't seen it, but I would love to. I'm not too hot to see some of the new-school "collaborations" in it, but the Funk Brothers alone are worth the price of admission. - Sun, 21 May 2006 7:25pm | ||
| Mutilashawn User Info... | http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=47175537 this is a breath of fresh air!!!! - Mon, 22 May 2006 4:55pm | ||

| Livevic Scott User Info... | Its not Motown AT ALL, BUT we got some rad Reggae/Dancehall at Skafest this year!! Junior Reid and Barrington Levy!!!! On the motown front, Yeah Sharon Jones & The Dap kings are gonna be AMAZING @ JazzFest - Thu, 25 May 2006 8:49am | ||
