Just saw on the news that (sometimes) local upright player James Taylor died in a car accident just outside of Hope last night. i had James in the studio a couple of times and he was a total pro as a musician and a really nice guy; didn't mind that I kept asking him to play "Fire and Rain" or "Traffic Jam" over and over (and I have to shamefully admit I can't remember who he played with but it was a session gig). Very sad, sometimes life on the road can get dangerous. R.I.P. James, paradise just got a terrific bow fiddle player. - Mon, 31 Oct 2005 12:09pm

I saw that too on the Chek-6 newscast at lunch. I don't think I've heard him before. - Mon, 31 Oct 2005 3:33pm

Argh! What a shame... James was a very cool guy. I jammed with him a lot in the mid-90s in Nanaimo, when he was still playing mostly on the trumpet. He helped create a really hip ten-piece jazz/funk group -- Decadence -- in 1996, and it still rehearses and performs today. We were really proud of what he accomplished with the Twisters.

Rest in peace, sir! - Mon, 31 Oct 2005 5:42pm

From yr Times Colonist......

James Taylor was a gifted bass guitarist and trumpet player who never let his informal musical training stop him from playing the blues.
His never-ending quest for music came to an end shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday when the former Victoria and Nanaimo resident was killed on his way to a concert in Prince George with his Vancouver-based blues band, the Twisters.
Taylor, 33, was killed instantly when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a careening tractor-trailer on Highway 1 in Hope. The truck driver, Donald Galagun, 48, of Maple Ridge, was also killed.
The lone passenger in Taylor’s truck was Langford native Matt Pease, who played in local funk collective Fungkus before joining the Twisters as a drummer.
He was airlifted to New Westminster’s Royal Columbian Hospital with serious injuries, including a severed artery to his kidney, Twisters singer David Hoerl said in a statement. His situation has since been upgraded to critical.
Hoerl and the other member of the band, guitarist Brandon Isaak, were following closely behind Taylor and Pease, but they were not seriously injured.
Taylor is survived by his wife, Carla, and daughter, Rebecca, 1. - Tue, 1 Nov 2005 1:05pm
