| LindsayW User Info... | Hello... I was a recent Victorian, and am currently finishing up my diploma in Music Business in Vancouver. I will be heading back to the beautiful city of Vic in mid-September, and will be starting my career there. I am in the process of drawing up plans to start a local promotions and management company, but would also like to work under an already established company. I am looking for 2 things.... 1.)Artists or bands that would be interested in talking to me about teaming up to start booking and/or management and 2.)recommendations about where I could start looking, business names, contact people and a gen overview of your experiences with these companies. I will be graduating with honors, have lots of references, and skills in deciphering and writting contracts (I also have a legal aid on board), dealing with press and publicity, and a large list of contacts. Can't wait to hear from my Vic locals... ahhh I miss the city see you all soon ~LindsW - Sun, 24 Jul 2005 6:16am | ||

| LindsayW User Info... | They are putting out a lot of audio engineers, but there is a small number of us business students. We have 9 right now with 2 combined semesters. I really enjoyed the course. I found it really practical, and helpful. There are some kinks. How are you finding life out of school? - Mon, 8 Aug 2005 9:07pm | ||
| joe90 User Info... | Here is some advice for you, and, if you are really serious about pursuing a career in the biz, take it: As nice as Vic is, get the hell out. In fact, either go to Toronto, or better yet, go to LA or NYC, and take it on the chin while you gain real experience, networking and even interning. Forget about any other place, even Van. Scraping away in Vic, managing/promoting/booking/whatever local Vic bands will do very little for you, will not enable you to 'pay the bills', and may even ultimately discourage you from your goal(s). I spent a few years in Van, working for two agencies, including SL Feldman, as well as buying talent for the UBC campus. During that time, I attended a number of music conferences in Canada and the US, and chummed with a bunch of folks from Canuck and Yankee record labels, music publishers, agencies, entertainment law firms, etc. I'm serious, grow some balls, bust out, take some risks, accept some serious temporary sacrifices, make it happen. Put together a concise and honest list of what you can bring to someone's table, round up every nickel you have, pack your bags, don't waste your time gabbing with friends and family, and say good-bye to Vic. Wherever you land, start combing the trades for opportunities, and be selective about who you accept as friends. All the while, you can plot how you will be a successful independent. - Tue, 9 Aug 2005 7:29am | ||
| Vegas J User Info... | Absolutely %100 right! Victoria is an amazing city with a great music scene and many people who have gone on ( ie LEFT town) to become Mega-stars, that's true, but there is no heavy music 'biz' to speak of here and really never has been. Local bands book directly through the bar owners of the 10 or so venues in town so there's no need for an agent. Original bands do most of their marketing through the net & get out on the road and head East. Media is very supportive in town but again, is approached directly by the artist with little problems and often good enthusiasm. Unless someone is established with solid contacts in L.A.,T.O. etc there's no a whole lot to offer locals that they don't already have...so I agree with Joe90, put the horse before the cart and go get set-up & networked in a major centre, and THEN come make Victoria a home base that you can work from. Not to be a downer or discourage you at all, but just trying to save you some time..Best wishes! - Tue, 9 Aug 2005 9:58am | ||
| The One After Two User Info... | Pitchfork is hiring Interns in Chicago. ahhh.... you can do music in Victoria. Its 2005, if you find a product you can sell, you can sell it where ever there is high speed internet. Go bug the dude at Cordova Bay Entertainment for an internship before illegally emmigrating to the US or hating your life everyday in Toronto. I agree with the above two posts... Networking is the end all, but its getting possible to do the game from here. I say try it here... if it goes no where then move to where you have to move... but I don't think the bookers in this town make tons of money, so... maybe start a thread for KD recipes. - Tue, 9 Aug 2005 10:38am | ||
