| inhalien User Info... | Yeah, she just played Vancouver about a month ago. I missed it but I have the same tape and a couple older lps. Last time I heard she was living in New York. - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 8:22am | ||
| Gman User Info... | She's the punk shit for sure. - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 1:50pm | ||
| _Griphin_ User Info... | She's not a punk, so what the fuck?!? :) - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 5:14pm | ||
| Gman User Info... | She is so punk. Maybe not leather, studs, and mohawk punk, if that's what you mean, but I think that definition of punk is a little tired. Personally, I tend to gravitate towards punk as an idea rather than a fashion. Feel free to disagree. - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 6:04pm | ||
| swallowingstars User Info... | In the 80's pre-Madonna - Nina was the bad girl - getting in trouble, being naked, bras, all that kind of stuff - doing avant-garde art things - being mouthy - she was the epitome of punk, avant-garde, power woman and frankly - she WAS the shit. She did these cool arty, weird songs - like a female Frank Zappa or something - well sort of, anyway. Remember Hare Krishna - v. cool You might be getting confused with the other Nina - 99 Luft Balloons -- she was not punk - more new wave - though still cool with those hairy pits. :D - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 7:50pm | ||
| swallowingstars User Info... | Oh and I forgot to add, if I remember correctly - was SO bizarre that she got kicked out of East Berlin (behind the wall at the time)... - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 7:56pm | ||
| Bob Stinson User Info... | Every time I mention Nina Hagen people always ask "You mean that cick that does that 99 balloons song" and then I regretfully have to kick them in the balls until they become unconsious. Nina is the shit for sure. She lived in L.A. in the early nineties and married some hardcore guy with "leather, studs, and mohawk" who was half her age. I have, I believe, three pieces of her vinyl. Her first EP , which is the best, contains her cover of "White Punks on Dope" and a song called "I want to go to Afrika" the craziest reggae tune ever. It's has a green cover with a picture of her in her trademark makeup. If you see it buy it! She has that crazy "Da Da-ist" aesthetic that is usually attributed to the French. A love of the bizarre and presenting confusing, shocking, confounding expressions as a challenge to our notions about art. Frank Zappa is a fair American analog, although Nina never did the purile sophmoric humour that Frank seemed to love so much. Glad to see she still has fans, more people should know about her. - Sun, 10 Apr 2005 10:44pm | ||
| Zippgunn User Info... | Nina is about as "punk" rock as the band that wrote her best song, the Tubes. Her most recent recording? An appearance in a recent version of Kurt Weill's "Threepenny Opera" (on RCA) where she sings "The Ballad of Sexual Slavery" like the cookie monster. Punk indeed. Her best "punk" record was "Nunsexmonkrock". Which sucks. - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 12:26pm | ||
| Gman User Info... | I disagree. I also think Kurt Weill is punk. Especially with Brecht. I would say New York, New York is her best known song. Also, her most recent album is "Big Band Explosion". It does not have a Kurt Weill song on it. I know you're quite opinionated, ZG, but I think we can agree to disagree, no? - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 4:28pm | ||
