yup, $5000 is affordable by anyone's standard, i figure.

also, i think this guy is definitely talking about a condenser.

i've heard good things about the studio projects mics, like the c1 or c3. they are fucking cheap, around $200 or $300, and apparently sound good. - Tue, 27 Apr 2004 1:42pm

Go with a Rode and you will be happy no matter what. I have a rode nt-2 and I would use it over a neuman U87 any day for vocals.. - Tue, 27 Apr 2004 1:46pm

Audio-Technica's AT 4033

Serves me really well. I use it for Vocals all the time and acoustic intrument recording as well. Heard lots of good things about Rode's products too. - Tue, 27 Apr 2004 2:25pm

If you're going to do any loud vocals into it, a Shure SM-58 (or Beta) Dynamic will take more punishment than the fragile and expensive models. Nothing wrong with them for vocals.
R0DE make awesome mics, but they sure aint no Neumann

Even the Apex large diaphram ones are pretty cheap, don't sound too bad, but a decent dynamic mic will put up with more abuse. - Wed, 28 Apr 2004 7:08am

RODE mics are HOT!, about 25% louder than the TLM...which is a better mic for vocals however. They aren't exactly cheap (the Neumann, that is) but I think they are the best vocal mic for under $2000. The RODE is brighter and more sizzly. Good dynamic mics are the old standby Shure 58 and BETA 58 or the Sennheiser 421. I've even gotten good results from an AKG D112 kick drum mic for super sizzly vocalists. Behringer makes a really solid super cheap condenser for about $150 that seems a lot better than the Apex mics that I've tried. You should own at least one condenser mic for your home studio. - Wed, 28 Apr 2004 7:36am
