| kevin | im looking for a new bass amp. my band has recently started playing gig(sound garden etc.) and i was wondering what type of amp would be good for these type of shows. I think i want a 2x10 cab and a head unit but i dont no what kinds are good what kinds are bad, that type of thing. if anyone has any ideas or gear they wanna try to sell me that would be awsome. thanx - Sun, 26 Jan 2003 9:10pm | ||
| Jason User Info... | I'd recomend the Line6 Bass Pod Pro Amp Modeler. Perect for home/studio recording and live. Or for a more traditional set up I'd say the SWR working man 4004 is a good peice of equipment. Awesome sound! a 2X10 is good but you should really think about adding a 15" to the mix. - Mon, 27 Jan 2003 1:56am | ||
| jackass | if you're gonna be doin' bar shows and nothin but bar shows, then a 2X10" might do you, but if you ever play gigs that don't have great sound systems (like 99% of most all ages gigs), you're gonna need something with some balls, and 2x10"s just aren't going to do it. Minimum 4x10"s for that kind of thing, and if you can get something bigger, that's even better. Amp choice is pretty subjective, depends on the bass guitar you've got, what kind of tones you want and how much you want to spend. The line 6 bass pod and a simple power amp might do you pretty well, but nothing sounds better than an all tube amp. My suggestion is buy a good guitar first, then get the gear to follow. Ampeg is king, SWR & GK are pretty good, Mesa Boogie is expensive, but really good too. Yorkville is cheap, but not as good as the others, still pretty decent though. Peavey licks ass for bass unless it's an all tube head, and even then Peavey is suspect. - Mon, 27 Jan 2003 11:18am | ||
| ROSS B AY User Info... | All that shit's true, but 5 years ago I bought a Yorkville 400 bass amp combo with 1 15 inch speaker and a 350 watt head and I've played something like 150 gigs with it, indoor, bars, outdoor, fucking everywhere and never ever had a problem. It's small which is good for transporting the fucking thing, and it's so loud it breaks windows in the house next door. The head has all the compression settings and shit, and an EQ and all that built in so you don't need anything else. Unless you use pedals, which is for weirdos. Good deal for what you get, and you can beat the living shit out of it and nothing happens. I know, I've tried so many times. I blew the speaker once when it was still under warranty, so the one in there now has been killing for over 4 years and no sign of wear yet. It rules. The speaker sounds incredible with a Marshall 100 watt guitar head through it too, sounds like Reign In Blood era Slayer for chunk. - Mon, 27 Jan 2003 4:20pm | ||
| jackass | I used to have a Yorkville 400B...same one as you from the sounds of it, but it doesn't have compression. It's got a contour, EQ and limiter. I used to have lots of problems with connections coming loose inside 'cause I used the contour all the time, and that adds lots of low end, which must have made stuff loose. I beat the crap out of that thing too, and I also played lots and lots of shows with it (it is nice that it's so small). I also had to replace the 15", which was not under warranty (I think it was like $70 or something to replace). The sound of that combo was okay for the money, but when you put it next to an Ampeg, or anything really...you can tell why it's so affordable. Overall, it's good, but it's not that great. I was very happy to move on to something a bit bigger and a whole lot nicer. - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 5:29pm | ||
