Bob Barker Hahaha.. Funny as hell to see Monday pop out with the first annual M Awards right about the same tme as the 2ndannual M Power Awards. Wonder if it will be the same cheese ridden pap as last years rigged up M Poop Awards. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 1:07pm
Anonymous none of it concerns anyone here anyways.
it really just a big joke - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 2:30pm
Happy Gilmore Ya,It's hard to belive that after panning the MPowers so hard, Monday is now ripping them off! There's your cheese.
And as far as the MPowers being "rigged" Bob??? The price is wrong Bitch. Get yer head out of your ass. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 2:32pm
Bob Barker You cant fool me. I saw last years results. Nice how all of the winning bands were directly involved with Kasper on the side. A true local awards event would include a board with members from most of the different music communities in Victoria, that can point out who are doing what and how well, and who is most deserving. As it stands it comes down to "how many friends a band has that have the gumption to get out and submit a ballot".

At least Monday Mag has a distribution factor and can actually get a fairly honest opinion from the public due to the ease of balloting and the general availablity and usage of the magazine.

I know people in prestigious bands who didnt even hear about Kaspers awards last year, and most of them still havent heard about it this year. that is no way to run an awards event!

Also, considering the fact that most of Victoria's better known bands, nationally and internationally, were NOT included in the M Power Awards is a show of the lack of local knowledge the organizers of that event have.

Remember, the bands who are doing better are the ones least likely to bother their fans for ballots. The bands who get out and drum up votes are typically those that are lower on the pole so to speak and need to do such things to get recognition. Now, Im not saying that is a bad thing at all, but Im saying that the truly deserving local bands are good enough to be SELECTED by a knowledgable board, and not have to go out and beg for votes!

But instead the M Power Awards focused on bands involved with Kaspers label or distribution network ( I forget exactly what he runs ) and alot of much better known bands in this city didnt even hear of the Awards. Im sure most of them dont care, but my point stands. CHOOSE the bands wisely, and read between the ballots. A group of 16 year olds with no experience can garner more ballots from their school chums than a band that is busy touring, and spending time and money pumping out albums, merch, vehicle repairs and rehearsal room fees. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 2:44pm
Anonymous I AGREE. Get a board who decides, and get rid of votes from friends. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 3:05pm
Happy Gilmore Some good points Bob. I'm just tired of hearing that the awards were "rigged" - mostly by people that didn't get involved by CHOICE. I agree, it could of used a lot more publicity (Kasper, I'm sure spent all he could - he's just a dude who's trying), but it wasn't a secret.
As far as Monday having distro - ya that definately helps, but are you asking for public opinion or not? You seem to mention both.
As far as "prestigious" bands not knowing about the event - I believe it was only open to unsigned bands.
Obviously it wasn't the be-all-end-all event, but it was the first - and I imagine it will improve - I give Kasper credit for trying to do something for the scene - more than most around here. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 3:29pm
Anonymous Kasper (who's real name is otherwise) is NOT a great guy. Very creepy and shifty. Alterior motives abound. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 4:32pm
Ron A. wow, Mr.Barker, you're really reaching for some dirt on this guy, aren't you? I happen to know Kasper personally, and he really is a nice guy who's simply trying to help out the local scene. You say:
"Nice how all of the winning bands were directly involved with Kasper on the side." and then you add:
"the M Power Awards focused on bands involved with Kaspers label or distribution network ( I forget exactly what he runs )"
haha You don't even know what his company does, and yet somehow you've come to the conclusion that he works directly with the award winners. The fact is that his company is an event production company, not an artist management company, so you're way off. And, from what I've heard, there is a panel of judges in addition to giving the public their say. Put in some effort to get the facts before you start pointing the finger. And, as someone who didn't even post their name mentioned, it is true that "Kasper" is a nickname, but that's no secret to the people who know him, and it is certainly no crime to have a nickname, considering that 99% of the people on this message board use an alias. Grow up, people. Support the scene, don't bring it down with your negative crap. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 5:53pm
Butt Nutt Does it really matter...did you hear how crappy all those bands were? - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 6:47pm
ho hum Even though it sounds a bit like it should be "alterior motives" it is actually "ulterior motives". The is no such word as "alterior".

Oh yeah, and are we still talking about that insignificant awards show. I tend to agree with Bob. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 7:03pm
Anonymous I know Kasper too and he's a fucking disgusting pig. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 7:27pm
shadow fag basher i've heard he's a shady character and that he is a manipulator. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 7:43pm
harlan sounds to me like failed musicians with axes to grind. look at yourself in the mirror and get some therapy. trying to slander others won't make you a better musician or advance your music career. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 9:06pm
Ron A. I think, judging by comments on this thread and the other one on this subject, there must be 2 different Kaspers. The personality traits are opposite, and one person mentioned he was "bald." The Kasper I know has a full head of hair. hmmm....cloning??? - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 9:37pm
Anonymous He's refering to "Kasper's" photograph on his website where he is bald. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 10:22pm
the chairman did anyone see hot hot heat in the new spin? it wasn't to bad. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 10:34pm
not James Ron A, personally I don't give a crap about James but you're a bit naive with this statement "The fact is that his company is an event production company, not an artist management company. He tried his hand at being a manager and in that capacity did in fact "manage" more than one band that "won" at his awards show. Hmmm, Iris comes to mind.

Having said that, power (pun intended) to the guy for trying I guess. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 11:01pm
Bob Barker For the record, I wasnt trying to imply that the bands of last year were not good. In fact a few of them are definate up and comers, Iris, Jeffrey Sez come to mind.. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 11:24pm
Ron A omg "Not James" you really are out of the loop. you obviously don't know the facts. - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 11:31pm
not James How so? - Wed, 15 Jan 2003 11:43pm

I have no idea why people in this nowhere town keep referring to friends of theirs with nothing better to do as "managers". That's funny. Hey, I guess my band has a couple "managers" too, yippppeee...... - Thu, 16 Jan 2003 5:30am
MasterMonker I see the M Awards ballot has appeared in Monday. Where will the M Power ballots appear? - Fri, 17 Jan 2003 2:12pm
Anonymous Probably on toilet paper! - Fri, 17 Jan 2003 2:55pm
Anonymous i still personally believe that music is not a competition.
if james kasper wants to have a little award show, he isn't doing anything productive for the scene. He's just causing more contempt in an already heavily vocally opinionated music scene.

plus he's a fucking psycho. - Fri, 17 Jan 2003 5:25pm
Japanese Air Force I personally found the M Power awards to be extremely suspicious as far as the "winners". It was embarassing.

I support James for bringing some attention to "his" bands, but the whole thing reminded me of something that Cordova Bay Records would do... definately some hidden agendas being played out there.

I hope J.K. gets some sponsorship if he's going to attempt this again, though... 'cause the sound was fucking terrible.

I can't say that I'll be going to the MPower awards this year, but I'll defintely check out Monday's party. I suppose any promotion for your band is good promotion... especially in this town. - Tue, 21 Jan 2003 3:39am
Sparkles All I can say is that this is great publicity for the the M Power Awards. I mean, musicans in this town really think they're top shit don't they?? - Tue, 21 Jan 2003 9:02am
