Beautiful Acoustic Venue: Bear's Den Cafe (Bear Mountain, Langford)

"Resort" = $$$

"Affluent clintele" = $$$

Musicians who perform live provide a service - all services are worthy of compensation.

Live music is a commodity - all commodities are worthy of compensation.

As with most contract workers, performing musicians usually bring their own tools to the job.

The best workers (those who do the best work) usually employ high quality tools to acheive such work.

High quality tools cost money, as does maintaining and transporting them.

Performing music may be enjoyable but, it is still work and, as such, deserves fair compensation.

You and your business have (and generate) far more money than the musicians whose work you wish to benefit from, yet you expect them to provide their services without financial reward.

Despite the fact that it takes far more dedication, effort, money and time to become a musician than a cook, wait person or dishwasher, you apparently deem the latter as being more worthy of financial compensation.

This seems very much to be an example of greed.

If you are unwilling to pay musicians to enhance your venue, why should your business, patrons and staff reap the benefits of such an enhancement?

Why should we (or anyone else) feel compelled to pay you for your services, if you are unwilling to pay us for ours?

We musicians have already begun spreading the word that you aim to exploit us without fair compensation and should therefore be boycotted.

Your loss.

Sincerely,

A. Musician. - Fri, 14 Oct 2011 2:18pm Edited: Fri, 14 Oct 2011 2:19pm

At the least the ad was totally up front by saying "but there is no pay for playing as yet", so, why not just ignore the fuckers and look for a venue that DOES guarantee pay? Am I missing something here? Thankfully it's not like down in the states where "pay to play" is becoming more (quite disconcertingly) prevalent. I can see your concern if this starts to become a trend among bars up here, sure, and certainly something to stay aware of, despite the fact that, ultimately, we are powerless to prevent, right?
And come on - playing in front of a bloated, yakking Len Barrie stuffing his pukey face with greasy chips?

Curmudgeon makes some good points.

I personally think that we need to make those who use exploitive practices such as "play for no pay" feel completely unwelcome like the vile curs that they are. Let them know where they stand.

Thin edge of the wedge, slippery slope and all that if we don't. Besides, it doesn't cost anything to send a message.

They are obviously so cheap that they won't pay socan fees for playing canned music, they would rather sucker some naive musician.

I hate cheapskates, they're usually rich. - Thu, 3 Nov 2011 2:42pm Edited: Thu, 3 Nov 2011 2:44pm
