I've been seriously considering taking up the bass. Absolutely no experience playing guitar at all. If anyone can give me some pointers of what to look for in an acoustic bass (not stand up) it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance! - Thu, 11 Aug 2011 12:45am

First off, is there a particular reason you want an acoustic bass? Volume levels aren't exactly a high point with acoustic basses(they still need to be mic'd/d.i/plugged in etc..). Personally if I were looking like you; Id look for a decent electric bass(which is a little cheaper than price points for acoustics); and if you like it, buy an amp... if not; sell the lazy man's guitar :P j/k.

However, if you are dead set on the acoustic; steer clear of the epiphones, they sound horrible amp'd up. - Thu, 11 Aug 2011 10:31am

My reasoning would be that I'm interested in learning the bass as well as small jams out on the deck with friends. Just learning for fun, don't ever expect to end up on stage at any point. My son is extremely sensitive to loud noises so I thought it would be better than something running through an amp and rattling the hardwood floors (he lives in the basement suite of our house). I guess I could go the electric route and just slap on a pair of headphones though.

Epiphone is in my notes now as nefarious when amp'd, thanks JI. - Thu, 11 Aug 2011 11:02am
