Citrus, the second album from Asobi Seksu, promises to take the New York City band from best-kept secret status to one of the most talked-about acts of 2006. Combining the space-age lounge stylings of Stereolab and the waves of distorted guitar and sweet pop sensibility of ‘90s noise-rock pioneers My Bloody Valentine and Lush, Asobi Seksu (“Playful sex” in colloquial Japanese) earned rave reviews (from, among others, the New York Times, Nylon, XLR8R) for their 2004 debut. A video for the song “Walk on the Moon” rose to #1 on mtvU’s Dean’s List, while the track itself garnered a top 10 spot on CMJ’s radio charts.
Citrus, a powerful, sweeping album that masterfully moves from gauzy, cloudy dreamscapes to squalls of electric guitar without ever losing a sense of melody is even better. The songwriting of Yuki (who sings in both Japanese and English) and guitarist James Hanna has improved, Yuki’s vocals are more assured and the band clearly is onto a deep, delicious sound that audiences can’t get enough of. Consistently selling out their shows in New York, Asobi Seksu is about to see its underground status raised.
