A singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Aysanabee’s music has been variously described as introspective folk, indie-pop-rock, and R&B – but the deep soul in his voice comes through in whatever song he sings. His music tells the story of his life, his lived experience and about reconnecting with his roots.
Solemn and soaring, backed by a swirling blend of indie, soul and electronic soundscapes, mournful saxophone and pulse-quickening finger-picking, Aysanabee’s striking sound is equal parts hypnotic and melodic. He’s drawn comparisons to Bon Iver, Kings of Leon and Sam Smith among others.
He is Oji-Cree from the Sucker Clan of the Sandy Lake First Nation, a remote fly-in community in the far reaches of Northwestern Ontario. This self-taught guitar player and songwriter currently calls Toronto home.
Aysanabee burst on to the music scene in 2020, and has since gone on to record and tour, performing more than 300 shows on major stages and festivals across Canada and globally. On Mar 23, 2024, he made history as the first-ever Indigenous artist to win JUNO Awards for Alternative Album of the Year and the coveted Songwriter of the year for Here and Now.
