The Concretes are not shy about their love of pop music. On their 2003 debut, the Swedish octet saluted Motown on two tracks (“Diana Ross”, “You Can’t Hurry Love”). On the band’s new album, the gloriously sun-dappled In Colour, The Concretes pay tribute to their favourite 7” singles on “Song for the Songs”.
Clearly, this love affair has paid off. Formed in 1995 by singer Victoria Bergsman, drummer Lisa Milberg and guitarist Maria Ericksson, the Concretes released their self-titled debut to international acclaim as critics compared their sound to that of the Velvet Underground, the Ronettes and the Vaselines. In Colour fulfills the promise of that first record with songs that are even catchier, more evocative and more soulful. Recorded in Stockholm and Omaha, In Colour comes from no one region but from the dimension of Pop, and recalls the bittersweet, three-minute symphonies of Dusty Springfield, Cat Power, the Shangri-Las and the Jesus and Mary Chain. The eight-piece is just as awesome onstage, where they are both shambolic and beautiful.
