Born and raised in Victoria, B.C., Grace Vermette will be the eighth participent in the ECSQ's Youth Mentorship Program. She is a Canadian mezzo-soprano completing the final year of her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance at the University of Victoria. She has been described as having a rich mezzo soprano voice, much determination, and an admirable expressive range. During secondary school, Grace discovered a fierce passion for choir. Learning about the facets of her instrument as she worked with her instructor, Katy Kerr, she found a breath of inspiration in the expression that was found through singing. As she took on a leadership role in her section, choir became an integral part of her life, which later at the age of 18 fueled her desire to pursue classical voice training. She began her degree as a soprano studying under Isaiah Bell and Kyron Basu, but it was not until her fourth year, working under Benjamin Butterfield, that she came upon an exciting aptitude for mezzo repertoire. Each discovery she has made with her mentors has been an enlightening experience that she carries with her. Grace is honoured to perform the beautiful work of Ottorino Respighi alongside the Emily Carr String Quartet.
Formed in 2006 by members of the Victoria Symphony, the Emily Carr String Quartet has established itself as one of British Columbia’s finest chamber music ensembles renowned for its passionate and inspiring performances. They have participated in residencies at Stanford University and the Banff Centre and have collaborated and recorded with such artists as: the Lafayette String Quartet, Lorraine Min, Marion Newman, Jamie Parker and Arthur Rowe. The quartet has been presented by numerous concert events such as the International Society for Contemporary Music's 2017 World Music Days, Music in the Morning and Music on Main concert series in Vancouver, the Ankara Music Festival in Turkey, Hornby Festival and the Victoria Summer Music Festival. The ECSQ was featured on CBC radio's "North by Northwest" and their debut CD Hidden Treasure was nominated for the 2012 classical recording of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. ECSQ has just launched their new CD "Portraits" featuring mezzo-soprano, Marion Newman with compositions by Iman Habibi, Jared Miller, Jocelyn Morlock and Tobin Stokes; all inspired by Emily Carr.
