John Prine was a master storyteller — his songs could have you laughing at the beginning of a verse and crying by the time you got to the chorus! Widely cited as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation, John was born and raised in suburban Chicago to parents with strong family ties to Paradise, Kentucky, a place they would take John to visit often. He started playing guitar at age 14, taught by his older brother David, and went on to attend classes at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Athough his roots were definitely Folk, John also wrote Rock, R&B, and Rockabilly, and while he may never have scored a major hit for himself, his songs were recorded by many, many other artists – Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler, Johnny Cash, and Dwight Yoakam to name a few. In January 2020, John received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, but tragically died three months later, on April 7, 2020, from complications of COVID-19. The VFMS has waited until now to stage our tribute concert to John. Please do come to celebrate his life and his music played by folks who loved him and his songs!
