The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra Fling!, the annual free concert at Ed Macgregor Park, will take place Sunday July 10 at 2:30 PM.
The community is invited to bring a picnic and chair and enjoy the sounds of music filling the oceanside park. A prize draw for lawn chairs, courtesy of Village Foods, and a 50/50 draw add to the fun!
Michael Klazek, associate conductor and a founding member of the SPO, will conduct Sooke’s own 60-piece orchestra.
The concert will feature a number of professional soloists and Harmony Project Sooke’s award-winning string orchestra and drumline. SPO principal cellist Maria Wang will conduct the HPS strings, and Alex Mold will lead the drumline.
“The Sooke Fling! is one of my favourite concerts of the year,” says Michael Klazek, who has conducted the Fling! seven times in the event’s 20-year history. “Families sitting on picnic blankets, dogs listening intently—and sometimes singing along, gorgeous symphonic sounds soaring across the park, and young musicians performing for a generous, appreciative crowd. The Fling! is a joyous, inclusive event for performers, audience and hard-working volunteers alike.”
Soloist works on the 2022 program include:
Toreador Song from Carmen and Adagio from Concierto de Aranjuez, featuring Merrie Klazek, trumpet
Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets, with Klazek and Marianne Ing, SPO principal trumpet
Bugler’s Holiday for three trumpets, with soloists Klazek, Ing and Benjamin Parker
Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, featuring Alex Chernata, clarinet
Libertango by Piazzolla, with soloists David Stewart and Paule Prefontaine, violins
