Event Description

Wonderment continues on the evening of August 1st at the Beacon Hill Park Cameron Bandshell, featuring a FREE showcase of ambient electronic music and video art...

Tomas Jirku began his career in the golden era of minimal and glitch techno, helping to define the genres through releases on Alien8, Force Inc., Klang Elektronik, and Traum. Over the past two decades, Jirku has built a strong repertoire with his exploratory approach to music, experimenting across genres to develop a sound he can call his own. His latest release, "Touching the Sublime" on Vancouver Island's Silent Season record label, is the culmination of this work, with material transformed through performance, experience and introspection. Inspired by his explorations of the remote wilderness that surrounds his home in Vancouver, Canada, Jirku evokes the philosophical concept of the sublime, where an overwhelming experience of awe confronts us with the limits of our rational minds. Tomas is also an internationally renowned nature photographer, and recently Tomas turned to videography, creating a striking visual component that his performance will serve as the soundtrack to.

(amiskwaciy / Edmonton)

Matthew Cardinal’s Asterisms album has been making waves in ambient music circles since its release in 2020, calling to mind the gradual melodies of Brian Eno, and the weightless flights of Fennesz. Matthew is also know for his work in nêhiyawak, the 2020 Polaris Prize nominated trio who headlined the BC Legislature Canada Day celebrations in 2019.

Stephanie Kuse is a media artist and graphic designer, who collaborated with Matthew Cardinal on his videos for Asterisms, and will be performing live video art alongside Matthew's music.

HRDVSION & efemme

Situated on opposing sides of the Atlantic Ocean necessitated a learning by Hrdvsion and efemme to communicate and express themselves in ways atypical to the average creative team. At times being apart for a month or two, and at its longest 9 months, they adapted naturally and faced the challenges that accompanied the journey ahead. Free to produce outside of genre limitations with the sole prerequisite that the output holds a theme of focused expression, allows them to rest confidently in anything they create, championing the fluidity derived from an uninvited life challenge that’s turned gold.

Formed in 2010 to help crumble masonry in abandoned art spaces, Weathercraft is an unpredictable ambient trio. Past performances have included laser guided abstract scroll scores, and beaming sound to remote speakers via light to generate disruptive audio experiences. All three artists have been making sound based art since 2000 or earlier, including performances, radio art and installation works.

PLEASE NOTE: To allow for enough darkness for the video content of this event, this event will end after dark. As this is a park environment with uneven terrain, please prepare accordingly.
Beacon Hill Park is Victoria's largest park and has public washrooms, picnic tables and a children's playground close to the venue. We encourage attendees to "pack-it-in/pack-it-out" and remember that there is no smoking in CRD public parks. Please respect physical distancing protocols. Hand sanitzer and masks will be available if needed.

Beacon Hill Park around the Cameron Bandshell is closed to car traffic, so attendees are advised to plan accordingly. Cycling, walking, and/or public transit encouraged. There are several bus routes which end at the BC Legislature, one block away from Beacon Hill Park. Or you can get bus route #3 or #1 which stop at the park. For those who are driving, there is parking along Douglas Street and by the Petting Zoo.

There will also be an afternoon Wonderment event at the Beacon Hill Park Cameron Bandshell earlier in the day, running from 2pm to 6pm, and featuring Playback Head and Adham Shaikh.

The 6th edition of Wonderment is presented by the Garden City Electronic Music Society (GCEMS) and supported by the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the BC Arts Council, the Capital Regional District, and the City of Victoria. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be made via www.gcems.ca (GCEMS is a CRA-registered charity).
