This finely tuned Colorado-based group return to Vancouver with lots of new material that's causing a bit of excitement. With a new album released April 1, this 5-piece blend traditional instruments, with a disparate variety of genres and strong harmonies. For these multi-instrumentalists, these singers and writers, sound and song serve one another: the play between instrumentation, composition, emotion and restraint is an organic unfolding. Elephant Revival's is the music of connection--kin-folk--and the message of Petals, their most intimate album to date, is not how life is about loss, but rather how much life there is in loss, how much potency, how much love.
North Carolina folk bluegrass duo, Mandolin Orange open. The duo straddle a line between tradition and contemporary music which may make them quite palatable to indie roots fans and folks who have developed a taste for more mainstream folk-influenced artists like the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, the Lone Bellow, and others of that ilk. But, at the core, Mandolin Orange are making truly folky Americana music, in the tradition of the Carter Family and similar harmony-centric groups.
