Spirited works for the Season of Advent, by Bach, Vivaldi, Buxtehude and Telemann;
Victoria Baroque Players' and St John's Chamber Singers' winter concert in the atmospheric Church of St John the Divine. The selection of music reflects the themes of light in the darkness and expectant longing so much a part of the pre-Christmas season.
The programme includes a jubilant Magnificat and exuberant Credo, both by Vivaldi, and Buxtehude's Advent cantata "Wie soll ich dich empfangen". Also on the programme is Bach’s haunting early cantata by "Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich", possibly the very first cantata he wrote. VBP's artistic director, Soile Stratkauskas, will be playing a joyous Flute Concerto in D major by Telemann.
The Victoria Baroque Players, now in their fifth season, plays on 18th-century instruments -- baroque strings, flute, bassoon and harpsichord -- and includes many prominent West Coast early music specialists. The 25-voice strong choir, conducted by David Stratkauskas, consists of experienced choral singers and advanced vocal students from the Victoria music community. VBP's and SJCS's concerts have become renowned in Victoria for presenting Baroque music for choir and ensemble in energy-infused, lively, and musically insightful performances.
