Grammy Award winning jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson has been defying genres throughout her 26 year career. The Mississippi born artist was called “America’s Best Singer” by Time Magazine, and her intimate performances attest to this. Wilson’s rich, expressive voice explores vintage blues, country, and folk, always with haunting results. Her landmark album, Blue Light ‘Til Dawn, redefined the idea of “jazz standards” by reimagining songs by Joni Mitchell, Hank Williams, and even the Monkees. Wilson’s body of work, including 2013’s rerelease of New Moon Daughter, represents an imposing legacy of originality. In addition to her Grammy Awards for “Best Jazz Vocal Performance” and “Best Jazz Vocal Album”, Wilson has received the Django D’Or, The Edison Music Award, and the 2012 Echo Award for Jazz. Her band includes Lonnie Plaxico bass, Brandom Ross guitar, John Cowherd keys/piano, and John David drums. Wilson returns to Victoria for the first time in a decade; this performance is not to be missed.
