“Souza’s voice is a remarkably lithe instrument, sensual, percussive, soulful, and capable of exploring multiple moods.” - All Music Guide

World music is heralding the emergence of one of the most innovative and electrifying vocalists in a decade or more. Carmen Souza was born in Lisbon to a Cape Verdean family, and she grew up immersed in the Portuguese Creole language that Cesaria Evora made famous around the world. Carmen’s vocal gifts were apparent from early on, and her mentors nurtured her traditional skills while simultaneously exposing her to Latin, Arabic, jazz and many other contemporary musical styles that she effortlessly incorporated into her music. By the time her third CD, "Protegid" (Protected), came out in 2010, Carmen was not only a mesmerizing vocalist but had become a gifted composer as well. Carmen’s September 2012’s release, "Kachupada," is deep, spicy and as friendly as can be. Now a budding world music superstar, Carmen intuitively merges musical cultures, creating a captivating blend of old and new, with funky roots and a swinging sense of elegant sophistication.
