Event Description
Formed in 1993, the Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra is a 19 piece jazz ensemble designed to play not only the original compositions and arrangements of Fred Stride and members of the band, but of classic jazz compositions and arrangements as well. Over the past few years the orchestra has performed concerts featuring the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn arrangement of Tchaikcovskys The Nutcracker Suite; the music of Toronto based composer Ron Collier and premiering his new arrangement of Oscar Petersons Canadiana Suite; "Kenton and Beyond", a retrospective of the music of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, and new jazz works by Fred Stride and Brad Turner with guest host Peter C. Newman; a recreation of the Stan Kenton/Johnny Richards master work Cuban Fire which was broadcast on CBC radio, and a concert of major works by Duke Ellington including reconstructions of "Black, Brown And Beige", and "Harlem - A Tone Parallel" (also broadcast on CBC radio). The band has also been featured at the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival (4 consecutive years) playing to capacity crowds. A CD of the bands original material is currently in the planning stages.
