I don't even like breaking boards in class. We will use a closed fist if some one is holding the board in the air, but not punching down. I've never seen anyone try a break like that, at that angle, with a fist. I don't know what the hell he was thinking, or who gave him a black belt.
Here is a much better example.

Upon further inspection, I see he is wearing a Tae Kwon Do uniform.
Those guys should stick to acrobatics and leave the brick breaking to Karate. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:19am

I did breaking boards a few times but gave it up pretty quick because it really does absolutely nothing other than make you look cool... which is not the aim of martial arts.

Well I guess you can learn a little breaking shit, but nothing that you can't learn more efficiently doing other stuff. It's nice to try just so that you know you can do it. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 6:26pm

Yes, but, imagine that same knifehand strike coming down on an opponent's collarbone.
Where do you train? - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 11:13pm

I haven't been training in a while unfortunately. But until recently I was at Sooke Martial Arts. It's Shotokan as a guideline, but we also do a lot of street tactics and hand to hand combat training, grapling, that sort of thing. Our Sensei has trained Navy and armed forces, so he teaches a lot of really practical stuff as well as traditional. I've been too busy with my music to train/teach steadily, so I've just been keeping up at home (my whole family has been doing it for almost 15 years), but I'd like to join another club soon- probably in a different style to get more diversity happening. What about you? - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 3:01pm

I also trained with Stan Peterec's advanced class for a year to learn some kickboxing skillz from the former world champ, while I was there I trained boxing with Seth. Good school.
Plus I've done some sparring with Mr Shiozaki and his students before he got deported. Tough dudes. - Wed, 30 Apr 2008 1:14am

"Okinawan Shorin-Ryu" ... ouch
Sounds cool, I won't try to discover your secret identity... BRUCE WAYNE!

Yeah Peterec's good. The humble warriors... or is that Puckett. I did a bit with them too, but not with that other dude... was he awesome?

8th degree.. sounds expensive. My dojo has no one higher than 5th =\ - Sat, 3 May 2008 7:24pm

$50 per month.

Mike Pucket is another former world champ kick boxer. Very excellent school. Too far out of town for me though. I've competed against his students in island competitions.

Mr Shiozaki was the little dude that busted a bunch of baseball bats duck taped together with his shin at the old memorial arena years ago. He died recently in Japan, after being deported from Canada. He was an awesome fighting instructor, and his students were some of the toughest fighters in the province. My Sensei and him were buddies, so our dojo's supported each other. KYOKUSHIN STYLE !
