A "vigilante" Trojan, that attempts to protect infected PCs from the effects of malware caught while using peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, has been discovered. The Windows Trojan/Erazer-A Trojan looks at default folders for downloading MP3, AVI, MPEG, WMV, Gif, Zip graphic and video files, and wipes anything it finds with these extensions in the target locations.

RAID0 would do nothing. RAID1 is a waste of money unless you're running a production machine (music or video) or a server. Joe user isn't going to invest in RAID1. - Wed, 17 May 2006 2:27pm

To me Raid seems like a good idea, but such a waste of hardware. Unless you have a server RAIDed for a company then good deal, but if you have your own computer RAIDed it's a waste of money IMO. What are the benefits for RAID, anyways? (other then all data being constantly backed up). - Wed, 17 May 2006 3:35pm

While Raid is essentially not the most useful to the common Joe, it does (as one of the other users mentioned) speed up your drives by making 2 drives into 1.
Which translates to faster READ times, but slower write times. So its really a matter of preference. For realtime data security and backup its a great tool, which is what I was getting at. Using P2Ps is just asking for trouble unless you take the proper steps to protect your assests.
Raid is quickly becoming available on almost all dual HD Pc's and Laptops. While you can't use above Raid 1 unless you have 3 or more drives, it still does have some benefit to the average users at the 0 and 1 level. - Fri, 19 May 2006 11:12am

im having a bit of trouble here... its says it looks to default folders for p2p prog.'s use for download's and then it cleans any files with those extentions... so what if you reconfigured your download folder so its the same folder you keep ALL of your music, would it then delete all of your *.mp3 or *.wmv... its probly a stupid question but it just seems like this "vigilante" trojan not only exposes your computer(disabling security functions) but it could in turn delete files that you want there... - Fri, 19 May 2006 2:28pm

RAID; Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks

If a program decides to delete files, RAID doesn't help at all, it'll be whiped from both locations at the same time.

RAID helps in single drive failures for other reasons, and there are some performance benefits here and there but thats not universal.

Obviously computers participating in P2P must be on the network, but please people keep your DAWs and recording machines totally OFF the Internet. Even general non-malicious software picked up on the Net is fatal to good performance and stability.

Norton or other virus scanners are suckers of computing resources big time. Its best to not need those sorts of programs at all and the only way to do it is stay away from public networks. I have many virus scanners as well, but I don't let them all scan real-time. When loading a 3GB audio file, the scanner chokes something fierce.

If this program does delete files or various types (without having additional reason to do so), then its quite possible this program was unleashed by the RIAA itself.
