Thinking of putting together a new band, I scroll through the listings of musicians available. Let's say I'm looking for a drummer.

Here's a guy who lists drums among 5 instruments. Maybe not him. Drums might be an "also" for that guy. There's a guy who lists drums with guitar and vocals. Is he mainly a guitarist? Does he really have his mind set on vocals? I can't tell. I move on.

A small proportion clearly ID drums as their main instrument. Same thing with guitarists.

HELLO! I don't want to know every instrument you have ever played.

What is your MAIN instrument?

Tip: If you want people to contact you to play the instrument that is your forte, then list your main instrument ONLY. Let them discover your "also " list later on. - Fri, 14 Feb 2014 10:03am

I hear you Glenn, My profile only lists what I am currently playing - I was leery of even listing Songwriter for fear of giving someone the wrong idea!

But seriously, are you looking for a project? I'm not much into ska, even though I am jamming with ska horn players tomorrow night....I am going for a punked-up little big band - rolling bass, blasting horns, and rip-roaring guitar.

You can search for me under guitar, vocals, or songwriting ;) - Fri, 14 Feb 2014 4:53pm

Hey Sandman.

I appreciate your reply.

If you and the horn players you jam with are interested in playing ska-punk in the style of "Destruction By Definition" (google it) then consider forming a band with me on bass. I can nail every song on that album.

If you lean more toward "pezcore" style ska-punk (google it)then, well, not me.

Peace.

If you click on the "details" section of the person you're looking at then it will give you their assesment of abilities. Most often one will be higher than the other (likely their main instrument). Some folks might need a guitar/keys/vocals, there are many advantages to listing all the instruments you play. Good luck on the hunt. Cheers, Lucius - Fri, 28 Feb 2014 8:45am

Lucius:

You write, "...there are many advantages to listing all the instruments you play."

Aside from the first you cite ("Some folks might need a guitar/keys/vocals..." which is no help when seeking to build a line-up starting, for example, with "Let's find our drummer.") please enlighten us about the many advantages of musicians listing several instruments they can play.

Sincerely,

Well Glen, I could say something like knowledge is power type thingy but well just agree that you like to discover what people can play and I like to know who I am dealing with. It saves me alot of time if I know my music will need a keys/guitar/singer rather than trying to find seperate keys, guitars, and singers.

Okay, Lucius. When you are ALREADY ‘dealing with’ somebody who’s listed on Live Victoria, then the full list of their musical capabilities could be helpful to get better acquainted with the possibilities of making music with them. (Of course, asking outright or just finding out could also work when you’re already dealing with somebody.) However, I am not the only person with a listing here who’s looking to make new connections with local musicians. That could be way, way easier if people would list their MAIN instrument prominently. - Sat, 31 May 2014 5:45pm
