“When Paquito D’Rivera plays, he exudes a generosity that manages to combine the details of fine art and the crowd-pleasing abilities of entertainment, without compromising either.”—New York Times
Since his defection from Cuba to the U.S. in 1980, the multi-talented D’Rivera has dazzled audiences and critics alike with his virtuosity—on alto sax and clarinet, and as composer/arranger/bandleader and producer. He has taken on the role of cross-cultural ambassador, creating and promoting a hybrid music that blends bebop, Latin, and classical. While in Cuba, Paquito first became known internationally for his work with the sensational Grammy Award-winning band Irakere. Shortly after arriving in America, he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra and in 1992 assumed leadership of the band. In addition to working with his own jazz and classical groups, D’Rivera has collaborated with renowned artists such as McCoy Tyner, Sarah Vaughan, Phil Woods, Stan Getz, and James Moody. Paquito has won eight Grammy Awards and his numerous recordings include 30 solo albums. A creative genius, the National Endowment for the Arts last year named Paquito D’Rivera an NEA Jazz Master, America’s highest honour in jazz.
