Ashley Wey, director in conjunction with St. Paul's United Church, sidney
Event Description
Ashley Wey, recording artist and member of jazz trio started this choir in Sidney, BC (by the Salish Sea) to salute the joy of singing and the sea, which rings our Peninsula on three sides. "Sidney has a fine tradition as a seaside community, one with strong maritime roots as well as a beautiful tradition of lighthouses, those beacons of light." Singers may be experienced or even unable to read music, but "singing is our way to communicate and connect and breathe together as a community," says Ashley. The concert is free and donations are important to support the Saanich Peninsula Food Bank. The lineup includes the jazz trio of Jan Stirling on piano, Ross MacDonald on bass and Damian Graham on drums with special guests Bob deWolff, guitar and Carolyne Solberg harp.
Repertoire is entirely member-driven and then arranged by Wey, a music professor at Camosun College. It will include a sea shanty (now and in the spring), a salute to Saskatoon, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and Sting's "Fields of Gold." Among others.
After, guests and singers will be treated to a catered later-afternoon treat, including coffee and tea.
For physical events that happen at a specific time. For example a concert, or dance performance. If there are multiple shows, you can still duplicate your event to cover them all.
