Among the most influential violinists of his generation, Sergiu Luca has won distinction worldwide as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and recording artist.
Equally at home in modern and early music, he made a sensation with his recordings of the complete unaccompanied works of J.S. Bach, the first rendering on an original instrument. His recordings also include the complete violin/piano music of Bartk, sonatas of Schumann and Mendelssohn, a selection of Czech music, and a disc of works by William Bolcom, with the composer at the keyboard. Bolcom has written a number of important works for Luca, including his 1983 Violin Concerto.
A native of Romania, Mr. Luca made his solo debut at the age of nine with the Haifa Symphony. His American debut came in 1965 under Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras in Europe, Israel, Latin America, and the United States. He has collaborated with such keyboard artists as Emanuel Ax, Albert Fuller, Joseph Kalichstein, Peter Serkin, John Gibbons and Malcolm Bilson.
Mr. Luca is the founder of Chamber Music Northwest, the Cascade Head Music Festival and Da Camera in Houston. His most recent project has been to found a new chamber ensemble, Context, which has developed a following on both sides of the Atlantic.
He is Artist-in-Residence and Starling Professor of Violin at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, Houston.
